The Avondhu

September 1st target for reopening of Fermoy Community Youth Centre

-

It has been a long time since the Fermoy Community Youth Centre visited pages of TheAvondhu and communicated with its followers and customers, who have not been in the facility since March 2020.

It looks like it will be a while yet before we are fully open to the public and our loyal pre-Covid clubs, associations and customers. The impact the pandemic has had on the centre has been enormous, as it is heart-breaking to see it closed for so long. Of course, we are not alone as many businesses have felt the pain of Covid19 and needless to say, it has had an effect on individuals’ mental and general health, being forced into “lockdown”.

Enough about Covid however, as the centre is ready to open its doors fully again and our target is September 1st 2021, when we will be reborn again! The building is in great shape and ready to answer your call any time as our staff, Community Employment and TÚS participants are fully Covid compliant.

The centre has applied for some funding during Covid but has not received any financial support. Our manager, Kieran Barry is a keen motorcyclist and in normal times he and his colleagues have an outing on their motorcycles, and while enjoying their sport help the centre by having a fundraising run. This year’s outing will take place next Sunday, 18th July when they will meet at Amber, Fermoy at 10am and take a spin to Tramore.

Therefore, there is a general invite to all motorcyclists to take part and this year we are delighted to be joined by members of the International Police Association Garda Motorcycle Club (IPAGMC). While on route from Fermoy they will call to Araglen and support their very own fundraising initiative, namely a tractor and motorcycle run.

So, as we all have a part to play in road safety, all those participating are asked to take care and heed the rules of the road. All support welcome.

REMEMBERING LILY HOGAN, UPLANDS, FERMOY

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Lily Hogan last Monday, 12th July. Lily was a true friend and volunteer of Fermoy Community Youth Centre for many, many years. She will be sadly missed by us all here.

Lily was a big bingo enthusiast and she helped us in the centre every Wednesday night in the bingo hall, selling our jackpot and quickie sheets. She was also one of our Community Development Draw promoters, selling cards every week without fail, thereby raising much needed funds for the centre.

We wish to offer our sincere condolences to her son Paul, daughter Stacey, their relatives and friends. Her pleasant manner, good humour and her visits to the centre will be sadly missed by us all and by her many bingo friends.

She will never be forgotten. May Lily rest in peace.
