A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

Let me first set the record straight re last week’s article when I stated that Kilworth Dramatic Society had qualified for the All-Ireland finals in Doonbeg in 2019 with ‘ The Beauty Queen of Leenane’ when in fact it was John McDwyer’s ‘Unforgiven’ that took them to their first All-Ireland final.

The year 2000 saw them stage ‘Two Of A Kind’ by Hugh Kinsella. Directed by Peg Coughlan, the cast was made up of John Shields, Patricia Coughlan, Mick Twomey, Tom Kiely, Brian Carey, Colette Sheehan, Josephine Cremin, Rose Slattery and Will Twomey. This first decade of the new millennium however was to bring with it some interruptions to the group’s schedule. there would be no play the following year (2001) due to the Foot and Mouth disease which caused major disruptions. There was to be further disappointment in 2002 when

‘Moll’ had to be abandoned due to unforeseen circumstances. However, a variety show was produced that year in its place.

2003 was also a barren year for the group but there was a comeback in 2004 when Peg Coughlan, with a cast of three (John Shields, Pat Flynn and Carmel O’Brien Quirke) staged a one-act play - Lady Gregory’s ‘The Work House Ward’ which was complemented with a supporting programme.

2004 was another blank year but in 2005, it was decided to resurrect George B MacCarthy’s ’ The Whip Hand’ which had been so successful for them six years earlier. Peg Coughlan directed with the same cast (Josephine Cremin, Charlie McCarthy, John Shields, Niamh McCarthy, Pat Flynn, Colette Sheehan, Brian Carey, Conor Cooney, Mick Twomey and Patricia Coughlan making up the cast

No play for the group in 2006 but a variety show was staged in 2007. Back in 1986, the group had staged John McDonnell’s ’ Silver Wed

ding’ which was a massive crowd pleaser, and this was again the choice for 2008. John Shields, Charlie McCarthy, Josephine Cremin, Conor Cooney, Patri

cia Coughlan, Mick Twomey, Pat Flynn, Colette Sheehan, Brian Carey and Niamh McCarthy made up the cast.

It was to be another one-act play in

2009 when Peg Coughlan produced ‘Sovereign Love’ which was also staged at the Castlelyons one-act festival.
