NATIONAL GAA SCENE

In yet another listless performance, Cork spluttered their way to a fifth successive decider with an unconvincing success over Limerick at Páirc na nGael. So depending on how you look at it last Saturday started off satisfactory enough. Later as expected Kerry were too much for Tipperary at Thurles. By 9pm that evening two of the four provincial champions, Tipperary and Cavan had their reigns of just over eight months ruthlessly terminated.

Kerry only partially unveiled their dominance over Tipperary. There’s more in there, and its coming out with brute force in their own backyard. They play the Rebels on Sunday, July 25th at Fitzgerald Stadium. It may not be pretty. It’s going to hurt. “There will be blood”. Like a good two year old, fraught with tension, exploding from the stalls with power and pace might describe the Rebel’s start to the 2020 Bord Gáis Energy All-Ireland Under 20 hurling final at Nowlan Park, Kilkenny also on Saturday evening last.

Ahead on twenty five seconds, with city based players Alan Connolly and Daire Connery quickly adding a further brace of scores. Sean Twomey from Ballinspittle scored the lead goal on seven minutes. Liam Murphy pointed the first Dublin score a minute later. Cork ahead a t 1-06 to 0-03 to sixteen minutes. Wicklow’s John Keenan waiting until twenty minutes to award the first rebel free. Half time and Cork ahead by double scores on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-07. Dublin pressed with all their might probably benefitting from a demanding Leinster final against a fancied Galway a forthnight ago. It was 1-15 to 0-14 to forty six minutes and you can analyse it anyway you like.

Is when this championship match was decided. Padraig Power a colleague of Shane Barrett and senior star Mark Coleman, all from the Blarney club, who registered the first score of the hour just after the throw in now on target again when crashing in a much welcome second goal. Substitute Brian Hayes from the St Finbarrs lcub as he has done before quickly adding back to back points. St Catherine’s and Cork player Eoin Davis largely unruffled and untroubled between the posts. Do the simple things well. It was 2-18 to 0-14 by fifty two minutes.

Still Dublin were made of stern stuff, securing five of the last six scores. There would be no caving in; another substitute Jack Cahalane brother of Conor and Damien, also Barrs had Cork’s final point in time added on. It finished up Cork 2-19 Dublin 1-18.

Being last year’s competition then association president John Horan was brought back presenting the winning cup to successful Cork captain, Conor O’Callaghan from Dromtarriffe. Up there in the hurling heartland of Duhallow!

Those Roche brothers resemble their dad. There is no doubt who they are. Brian Roche gave an insightful and relevant interview in picking up the man of the match award. As did star of the past Wayne Sherlock as apart from manager Pat Ryan has a selection committee. Also including ‘Rasper’ of Aghada and Imokilly fame.

So who was it that said, “Lightning doesn’t strike twice!” or is it a case of the more things change the more they stay the same! Cork also defeating Dublin in the equivalent Under 17 final of 2017. Secretary Eleanor’s pre match text that morning was right. Up the rebels. Rebels abú! At least “hurlings coming home!”

There is always fear of the unknown one seems to jumble and unravel issues in your head until such time as reality takes over. So it was with the first round of the hurling draws made by new association president Sean McCarthy and going out live on the national airwaves on Monday morning last.

Cork and Galway receiving byes, Laois was preserved their Liam McCarthy status with a merited win over Antrim last weekend now face Waterford, but their would be no doubt that the Clare/ Wexford pairing is the match of the round. Brian Lohan v Davy Fitz. Even though it’s a qualifier two teams who have shown clear for thus far in this championship and you would have to say one of them would be very unlucky to make an exit at this point in time. But one of them will definitely go. Draws for round two assume the 8.35 slot on RTE Radio One on Monday morning July 19th.

ROUND THREE GROUP FOUR EAST CORK JUNIOR HURLING LEAGUE CUP Cobh 4-07 St Catherine’s 0-16
