Action in MTU
It was another day of action in MTU last weekend as the U9-11 pairs events took place. Unfortunately, there were no individual events this year for this age group, but competitors paired up to compete in two events each under the watchful eye of Shane Thornton, coach, and assigned club manager for the day.
Shane, a formidable athlete himself, has said that doing well in Munster is a huge achievement with the high level of competition in the province. In the pairs event, athletes are paired with a club member and their best throws/ jumps/runs are added together to determine placings.
U9S
Zoe O’Connor and Sophie O’Hallorhan were paired in the U9 60m and 300m events and had a fantastic debut to claim silver. A space to watch! U9 pair Niall Towey and Thomas Burke just missed the medals in the long jump and had a fantastic 300m in a competitive field. Eoghan Finn and Hugo Sarsfield came fourth in the 60m but had a fantastic turbo javelin and claimed the silver medal.
U10S
In U10s cousins Molly Thornton and Eva Horgan jumped a personal best (pb) in the long jump in a field of over 50 athletes and ran a pb in the 60m. A great achievement for the girls. Darragh Crowley and Frank O’Brien came fourth in the long jump and had a great 500m, but the competition was fierce. Max Thornton and Aaron Horgan came fourth in the 60m and got silver in the turbo javelin.
U11S
In U11, cousins Micheal Quirke and Charlie O’Brien were unlucky in the long jump and finished just outside the medals in the 60m. The second pairing of Mark Williams and Joe Gallagher competed well in the 600m and their debut turbo javelin.
Some of our athletes were competing for the first time, and others after a long hiatus. As a club we are so proud of their achievements in these difficult times, and look forward to many more days on track and field following their progress.
Next weekend it’s the turn of the U12-U19 athletes and we wish them well!
