Mary McCarthy wins Fermoy Print and Design and the Baker Cup

-

Last week’s competition held on the first weekend in July was very kindly sponsored by Fermoy Print and Design and we thank them most sincerely for their wonderful support of Fermoy Golf Club.

The weather over the two days varied slightly with the Sunday ladies meeting a few very heavy showers during their round which when they came were torrential but cleared through quickly. The Monday players fared better with the day remaining dry and pleasant. Overall, the scoring was very high; a fair challenge had been set. The winner was Mary McCarthy (28) who playing on Monday returned a great score of 6up narrowly pipping Eucharia Crowley (22) on count back.

The Baker Cup was played in conjunction with this competition and the winner Mary will have her name attached to the trophy for the next twelve months. Traditionally the competition must be played versus par and there is a special prize for the lady in seventh place, the lucky recipient this year is Ber Hennebry (24) who also returned a very good score of 3up. This special prize was kindly sponsored by committee member Audrey Cremen.

Next Saturday and Sunday, 17th and 18th July we have our first major of the year and we wish captain Gerry, his wife Margaret and family a great weekend. We hope the sun shines for us all. Ladies have the option of playing either Saturday or Sunday and it will be a stroke play format. The timesheet is open for booking.

THURSDAY MORNING LADIES

On Thursday last 21 ladies arrived for the scramble, while we didn’t have sunshine it was nevertheless a lovely morning for golf as there was hardly a puff of wind and the temperature was very pleasant. With such ideal conditions for golf, it’s no surprise the scoring was high and in first place with a great score

of 28.9 nett were Josephine McInerney, Olive Murphy and Mary Kennedy. In second place were Eucharia Crowley, Mary Deane and Pauline Hyland 30.4 nett, in third were Ger O’Sullivan, Eileen O’Neill and Shivie O’Meara 31.2 nett. Thanks to Shivie and Tony O’Meara who sponsored the prizes, also thank you to organisers Vera Santry and Kathleen O’Regan.

GET INTO GOLF PROGRAMME

There was a terrific response to this programme, which will be run under Golf Ireland guidelines over the next two years. Committee members Martha Brennan and Annette Twomey have put in a lot of work and as a result of their huge commitment quite a sizeable number of ladies joined Fermoy last Monday evening. We extend a warm welcome to them all; golf is a great sport, which can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities.

Martha and Annette will continue to run a beginners evening for the new members on Mondays over the remainder of the summer. With so many ladies having joined it would be wonderful to have some extra volunteers to assist Martha and Annette. If you have some time to spare do come along and welcome the new ladies into our vibrant and very social club.

FRIDAY NIGHT MIXED

Due to the weather forecast on Friday last the mixed was cancelled but hopefully the weather will be

kinder to us tomorrow night and we can begin the Captain’s Weekend in style. Draws will take place from 5.30pm.

MEN’S CLUB NOTES INTER CLUB COMPETITIONS

There was a super Saturday at Fermoy as three teams were in action in inter-club competitions.

It was a busy day as our Junior Cup, Pierce Purcell and Mixed Foursomes all played their matches. It turned out to be a great day with all three teams winning. Our Junior Cup team started the ball rolling by beating Mahon 4/1 which included two wins at Mahon with the third match called in, and another win at Fermoy, The Pierce Purcell Team won 3.5 / 1.5 against Castlemartyr, with no match lasting beyond the 16th at either venue.

Finally, our Mixed Foursomes Team won 3.5 / 1.5 against Monkstown, with again some big victories recorded. A big thank you to Jerry O’Riordan, Leslie Edwards and Joe Fogarty for their efforts so far, let this be the start of a very season.

To complete our super weekend, Fermoy beat Cork Golf Club 3/2 for a super win in the Irish Senior Cup. This was a thrilling win with Olan Barrett bringing home the deciding point beating Gary O’Flaherty on the 17th in Cork. Olan was 4 under par for the round. Dean O’Riordan also had a terrific win in Cork recording seven birdies in the match. Cillian Twomey won a fantastic game on the 18th in Fermoy. The standard of golf from both teams was fantastic and they only pity was that there had to be a loser, well done to team manager

Ray Hurley and all the players.
