GOOD WIN FOR SENIORS

-

Fermoy 4 Kanturk 1

Fermoy proved too strong for newcomers Kanturk in their Keane Cup Group game on Friday night last. They got off to the ideal start when Dominic Wotjas played the ball behind the Kanturk defence and Steve Quinlan finished well. They continued to have the better of the play without adding to their tally, and Kanturk finished the half well and only a good save by Cian Hogan and a goal-line clearance by Ricky Fraher kept the lead intact at half time.

Fermoy began the second half well and had the game wrapped up with 3 goals in 20 minutes. Steve Quinlan got on to a pass from Kurt Wheeler and scored from a tight angle, and a few minutes later Dominic scored with a good shot from just inside the area before substitute Gavin Quirke got the fourth with an easy finish after being set up by Steve Quinlan. Kanturk did pull a goal back late on but it was too late to have any affect on the result.

FERMOY U12 GIRLS SEMI-FINAL Fermoy 3 Lakewood 1

The girls put on a terrific performance in their cup semi-final against a very strong Lakewood side. Lakewood started the better of the sides but couldn’t get inside the Fermoy defence anchored by the impressive Lilly O’Callaghan. The girls grew into the game and the lively Aimee Kearney hit the side netting twice, soon after Fermoy broke the deadlock.

Lakewood failed to clear Amyee Lavery’s corner and Aoibhe Howard reacted first to give the keeper no chance. 5 minutes later Fermoy went 2 up following a lovely move down the right wing. Aoibhe won the ball back in the right full back position and played a lovely ball to Aideen Wall, who took on the defender and put in a brilliant cross for the oncoming Aimee Kearney to finish. Sofie Doyle added a 3rd before half-time with a classy finish after a running onto a great pass from Amyee Lavery.

The second half was end-to-end stuff, with the girls who were introduced doing brilliantly. Sofie, Sarah O Connor, Aideen and Amyra Lavery all going close on occasions. Ruby Mae Walsh was again in brilliant form in the Fermoy goal, and made a couple of brilliant saves. Lakewood got a deserved goal with a minute to go, finishing from close following a brilliant double save from Ruby Mae.

It was an excellent team performance from the Fermoy girls with every girl playing her part and we now look forward to a final. A special thanks to the parents who rearranged staycations in order to make players available for the game today, and also to the coaches in Fermoy GAA who rearranged a camogie match to avoid a clash on the morning, it’s much appreciated.
