NARROW VICTORY FOR DONERAILE

Doneraile 1-11 Shanballym­ore 1-10 Near neighbours Doneraile and Shanballym­ore met in the 2020 Co JBFC (1) at Castletown­roche on Friday evening. It was close all through with Doneraile advancing by the narrowest of margins.

Jake Buckley opened the scoring with an early point. Doneraile levelled when Tony O’Flynn worked well for Cathal Sweeney who kicked over. Both sides were off target before Robert McHugh edged Shanballym­ore ahead. Eoin McHugh followed with a pointed ‘45. Just before the water break Cathal Sweeney and Darragh Palmer swopped a point as Shanballym­ore were 0-4 to 0-2 ahead. Further pressure yielded a Ben Cronin point for Doneraile. Doneraile had a goal by Kevin Sheehan against the run of play that put them ahead 1-3 to 0-4.

Shanballym­ore recovered well. They had points by Sean Lynch and Micheal Burke after a four man attack as they forced level. In injury time Eoin McHugh with a free gave his side an interval lead 0-7 to 1-3.

On the resumption Sean Lynch worked well for Eoin McHugh who added another. Doneraile made a good comeback. Points by Ben and John Cronin levelled at 1-5 to 0-8. Ben Cronin with a free edged the winners in front. Good play by Cathal Sweeney and Ben Cronin led to a well taken point by Cian Donlon that had Doneraile 1-7 to 0-8 clear at the second water break. Early on the restart Kevin Sheehan and Garry Sweeney with points gave Doneraile a 1-9 to 0-8 advantage.

Ben Cronin pointed a difficult free and he followed from play as they led 1-10 to 0-8. Shanballym­ore finished strong. Jake Buckley pointed and when Robert McHugh was brought down in the square Darragh Palmer netted from the penalty. Jake Buckley pointed a free as the game entered injury time. Shanballym­ore had a chance to force extra time – Eoin McHugh, Alan Sheedy, Barry Sheedy and Brian O’Reilly worked well for Jimmy Burke whose effort for an equaliser under pressure went narrowly wide. The final whistle followed and Doneraile were through to meet Dripsey.
