COUNTY LEAGUE HURLING GROUP 4B ROUND 3 Fermoy 1-21 Mayfield 1-14

Last Sunday morning, in front of a sizeable crowd, Fermoy encountered the North city side Mayfield in our final group game of the league.

This turned out to be a very entertaining game with Mayfield giving as good as they got in a tough but fair hurling game. The first score came in the 5th min and it was Mayfield who got it. They scored a second before Jake Carr got us up and running on 8 mins. Adam Creed and Martin Brennan made it 03-01 then Mayfield levelled it up by 13 mins with two points. The scoring ramped up after this with Jake getting a point on 14 mins then Gary O’Callaghan increased our lead to two points on 15 mins. Mayfield scored a free on 16 mins before Jack Scannell got in on the scoring with a point on 18 mins. A free and a point from play got Mayfield back on track by the 24th minute to make it 0-07 to 0-06 in their favour.

Two points from Adam Creed and Jake Carr had us ahead on the 26th min but Mayfield equalised on 28 mins. We then proceeded to score three points without reply from Jake on 29 and 30 mins and Kieran Morrisson on 31 mins. We thought we would be heading for the short whistle with a 3 point lead but Mayfield had other ideas. In the 32nd min their full forward was hauled down in the square and the referee called a penalty. They duly dispatched it to level the game up and the half-time whistle was blown. Scoreline: Fermoy 0-11 Mayfield 1-08.

We started the second half at a tremendous pace and basically finished the game by the 40th minute. A well taken goal by Ruairi O’Hagan on 33 mins got us on the front foot and this was followed by a point from Darragh O’Carroll on 35 mins. Jake scored on 36 mins before Mayfield got their first score of the second half from a free on 37 mins. Between the 38th and 41st mins Fermoy got 4 points and these came from Jake (2), Shane Aherne and Kieran again. Mayfield pulled back two points on the 42nd and 45th mins to make it Fermoy 1-17 Mayfield 1-11.

We were playing well within ourselves at this stage and Shane got his second point on 46 mins, this was followed by Adam scoring his second point of the game on 48 mins and then Jake fired over another point on 52 mins to take us to 1-20. A free from Mayfield on 54 mins was followed by a point from play on 56 mins before Ben Twomey completed our scoring on 58 mins. Mayfield had the last say with the final point of the game on 59 mins. Final Score: Fermoy 1-21 Mayfield 1-14. This was a very good performance from the boys who now go on to face Ballincollig in the semi-final, which is provisionally set for the weekend of the 25th July. Fermoy abu!

AVONDHU JUNIOR B FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP Fermoy 1-06 Ballyhooly 0-12

Fermoy fielded our third team for this championship encounter with our near neighbour’s Ballyhooly in Ballyhooly.

I missed the first half and am taking the scores from Twitter. Fermoy lead by 2 points to 1 point in the 6th minute. In the 10th minute Fermoy were leading by 1-02 to 0-02 with the goal coming from the returning Wayne Fitzgerald. Fermoy were leading 1-03 to 0-04 on the 14th minute and Ballyhooly got a point in the 15th minute to make it a one point game. In the 24th minute the game was tied at Fermoy 1-04 Ballyhooly 0-07 and Fermoy got the final score of the half with a point to make it Fermoy 1-05 Ballyhooly 0-07. The match was level on the 36 mins when Ballyhooly got a point and then both teams exchanged points to keep it level on 40 mins.

Just before the water break Ballyhooly took the lead with a point from play. Shortly after this Ballyhooly got a penalty but Jack Gallagher, our goalkeeper, made a great save. After this the boys had chances but just couldn’t get the scores and it was Ballyhooly who finished the strongest. We did not score again for the rest of the match with Ballyhooly getting the last two points of the game. The final score was Fermoy 1-06 Ballyhooly 0-12. Hard luck to the lads on what was a trojan effort as they bow out of this championship. Fermoy Abu! We wish the best of luck to Ballyhooly in the next round and thanks for a great sporting game.
