Lismore are champions despite defeat

-

Lismore 1 Brideview Utd 2

This local derby saw both sides put in a tremendous effort by all the players and kept the fans right on their toes right up to the final whistle.

Lismore got off to a great start here with a fine goal headed home by Joe Motherway in the fourth minute. Hegarty had a fine effort well saved by Utd’s keeper McDonnell after 13 minutes. Utd were back on level terms in the 15th minute when Marsh shot into the corner. Three minutes later Utd went in front when a great volley by McCarthy gave O’Keeffe no chance.

McDonnell had to get down and deny O’Sullivan in the 25th minute and just five minutes later the same player shot wide from close range. At the break Utd led 2-1.

More goals were expected in the second half but alas we got none. This was due to both keepers who were outstanding, especially McDonnell who saved from Aldred, Duffin and Shanahan Quinn, as Lismore came looking for an equaliser. It was not to be however and Utd held out for a win after a very entertaining game.

SYNERGY CREDIT UNION, FERMOY U13 LEAGUE MOGEELY ARE CHAMPIONS

On Thursday night last in Leonard Fraser Park, Tallow, Inch and Mogeely had to go into a playoff to see who would be crowned league champions for the season 20/21 in what has been a very different season to the ones we used to know.

Other leagues are now coming to an end and Tallow side Brideview Utd are right up there in the U12 and U14 league tables. Lismore looking good in the U16 league as the curtain comes down on all league activity this coming Sunday.

A season perhaps that everyone would rather forget and we look forward to next season with the virus behind us and good times ahead.

Mogeely 4 Inch 1

The meeting of two East Cork sides in the U13 playoff was a real local derby game these two clubs with bragging rights also up for grabs. The game took place on the excellent pitch in Leonard Fraser Park, Tallow on a bright sunny evening.

Inch took an early lead here when Ryan Murphy shot home. Oscar Smiddy shot home for Mogeely midway through this first half and the sides went in at the break locked together at 1-1.

The early part of the second half was end to end with both sides going for victory. However, as the half progressed, Mogeely got on top. Smiddy put them in front and further goals from Connaughton and Clifford saw Mogeely clinch the title much to the delight of players and supporters of Mogeely.

To be fair to Inch, they just did not click in the second half but no doubt they will be up there at U14 level for next season.

For United keeper Darragh O’Brien was outstanding despite the eight goals. Full credit to both sides for playing this game as the league had been won by Mogeely on Thursday evening last.

NISSAN MOTORS, FERMOY U14 LEAGUE TREMENDOUS END TO LEAGUE

What an end we have to the U14 league with three teams Brideview Utd, Ballyduff Rovers and Ardmore all in with a chance of league honours. All three teams were in action on Saturday last and all three clubs involved in terrific games and no shortage of goals.

RESULTS BALLYDUFF WIN DERBY Ballyduff Rovers 6 Brideview Utd 2

League leaders United travelled to meet second place Ballyduff on Saturday morning last and it was the Rovers who won the points and they now find themselves just two points behind the leaders with just two games each to play.

Ty Corcoran put Rovers in front after just four minutes. English tested Utd’s keeper Good in the 8th minute but Good saved well. The same player was in again but shot over from close range. A great Rovers move started by Corcoran to Burke and he looked like scoring but Cian Murphy got in a great tackle to clear the danger.

English broke through Utd’s defence in the 32nd minute and found the net to put Rovers 2-0 up at the break.

Utd started well in the second half and Murphy (Billy), Wall and McDonnell all went close in the opening ten minutes. Nugent and Sheehan were both denied by Rovers keeper Landy. However, it was Rovers who again found the net when English struck low to the net. It was 4-0 two minutes later when Corcoran shot home.

Landy again denied Wall before United got their first goal when Wall was brought down and Billy Murphy shot home the rebound after Landy had saved. This came in the 20th minute and two minutes later Burke restored Rovers four goal lead.

Wall beat the offside trap in the 60th minute and shot into the net giving Landy no chance. It was now 5-2 to Rovers. Power, Pratt and Murphy (Seanie) all went close for the Tallow side but it was English who had the final say when he struck a terrific volley to secure the points and a hat trick for himself.

A good win for the homeside who had some terrific players on view and no doubt we will hear more on these players in the months ahead.

Rovers: O Landy, M O’Donovan, O Hannigan, C Kenny, D Hickey, X Van De Van, B Burke, C Kenneally, K English, T Corcoran, B Higgins, G Casey (all played).

A THRILLER IN CAPPOQUIN Cappoquin/Railway 5 Ardmore 4

A real thriller here on Saturday morning last that left managers, players and supporters exhausted after a thrilling game that was only decided in the final few minutes. Ardmore led 3-1 at the break.

Whelan put them in front in the 5th minute but the homeside equalised ten minutes later when Coughlan scored from close range. Whelan again put the seasiders back in front and Liam Clancy added a third before the break to put the visitors 3-1 ahead.

Twomey got the homeside back in the game early in the second half. Lonergan added another to level it at 3-3.

Whelan grabbed his hat trick to put Ardmore back in front. Again Coughlan struck to once more see the sides level, at 4-4. Time was now running out when up stepped man of the match Jack Lonergan to score what proved to be the winner of this thrilling game. Well done to both sides here.

SYNERGY CREDIT UNION, FERMOY U12 LEAGUE SHOCK DEFEAT FOR KILWORTH Cappoquin/Railway 2 Kilworth Celtic 1

Kilworth travelled to Cappoquin on Wednesday evening last still in with hopes of winning the league title. This was a very good game of football and the homeside ran out winners with goals from Cathal Hogan and Mikey Ware.

For Celtic this was a big blow to their title hopes and faced a must win games against league leaders Brideview Utd on Wednesday.

Ballyduff Rovers 2 Ardmore FC 1

Another keenly fought game here and the result could have gone either way as both sides fought hard for the three points.

Rovers were 1-0 up at the break and went 2-0 up in front with ten minutes to go.

Admore did pull a goal back through Padraig Foley and saw a great chance to equalise but the ball came back off the post and Rovers held out for the points.

Brideview 4 Mogeely 0

Utd despite being short some regulars due to illness and holidays ran out winners against East Cork side Mogeely. Utd were well on top in the opening half. The visitors keeper Ronan Smiddy brought off some terrific saves from Guildea, Whelan, Kerrigan and Forbes.

He could do little in the 25th minute when Whelan rounded Leahy and Kenneally before shooting to the net. This was the only goal of the first half.

The second half was only five minutes old when Whelan again struck for Utd. Utd now began to get on top and further goals for the homeside from Guildea and Jack Dee saw Utd clinch all three points and continue their winning run and keep them on top of the league.
