Blackwater Valley Makers moving back to Fermoy

- KATIE GLAVIN

Blackwater Valley Makers have announced their reopening in a brand new premises at No 12, McCurtain Street, Fermoy with an official opening pencilled in for September.

For a period, the Makers left Fermoy after closing the doors on their Pearse Square premises in January this year where they had first opened up shop in 2019. After saying goodbye to the former Ulster Bank site, the Makers moved into The Mill in Castletownroche for the summer months of June, July and August.

The Makers have steadfastly stuck together as a group with regular zoom meetings throughout the lockdown phases and have continued with production and creativity while keeping in touch with valued customers and supporters.

“We’re not just colleagues, we’re kindred spirits who share a love of creating art. I’m so looking forward to reuniting with my BVM family and our lovely customers,” said artist Patti O’Leary.

In the heart of Fermoy, the new premises on McCurtain Street promises all the light and air of the past gallery space combined with easy access in the centre of the town.

According to Charlie McCarthy, the return to Fermoy is a ‘thrilling’ move for the Blackwater Valley Makers.

“It’s thrilling to have the shop as a centre of the creative economy in Fermoy, where people can meet and enjoy the artistic creativity of BVM,” Charlie said.

Artist Carol O’Sullivan told TheAvondhu that she is most looking forward to displaying her work once again.

“I am looking forward to displaying the fruits of my creative labours, for what is art without a physical audience?” she said.

Just a short step away from the old gallery location, the Makers are inviting everyone to pay a visit and enjoy their new work on display.

Art photographer Lorna McDonald said: “The work looks after itself but connections are where import begins. Remembering to be human. Our customers are our anchor and reason.”

Opening in the second week of August and with the official opening in September, the Blackwater Valley Makers hope that you watch this space for more information.

Glass artist Suzanne O’Sullivan spoke about the opening of the Fermoy premises saying: “Community is at the heart of the town and creativity brings us all together”.

Makers and artists are always on hand and eagerly await your company and enquiries. Open daily Monday to Saturday, 10am till 6pm.

The Blackwater Valley Makers look forward to welcoming customers new and old and to enjoy your company in the new gallery on McCurtain Street and wish everyone the best in new times.

Thanks were extended by the Makers to Cork County Council, Synergy Credit Union and TheA vondhu newspaper for their ongoing support.
