Ain’t no mountain high enough - even for a kayak

- MARIAN ROCHE

Fans of the sea will know the absolute pain of carrying their kayak from the sea to their vehicle - now, how about taking it up to the highest point in the Knockmealdown range?!

One Tallow company will be undertaking a sea-to-shore feat for Temple Street, as the three company founders intend to haul one of their kayaks up 2,608 feet, to Knockmealdown Peak and back down again, to improve upon last year’s fundraising efforts for The Children’s Health Foundation.

Tallow’s Kieran Geary, Donncha Mulcahy and Eoin Condon, of MCG Kayaks, will be hauliers of a kayak up to the peak on 11th December. Kieran told The Avondhu why.

“Temple Street has helped out a number of families here in the area, and so we partnered with them for last year’s event, which raised over €2,000. For this year we’re hoping to outdo ourselves!”

The team will be taking the 23kg, ninefoot-long kayak up to Knockmealdown via a harness and chain, in an out-and-back trek - though Kieran says they may have to be carried back at that point!

“If anyone wants to join us, they’re more than welcome. I’m sure we’ll have more than a few laughing at us in any case!”

Last year the trio raised over €2,000 raffling off one of their kayaks. This year, €1 from each donation will go towards an entry to win one of the kayaks - but they promise it won’t be the one they tow up the mountain.

The mammoth undertaking will take place on Friday, 10th December at 10am. Donations can be made at justgiving.com by searching for ‘MCG kayaks templestreet’.
