Ceremony to remember Glenbrohane and Ballylanders volunteers

- MARIAN ROCHE

A ceremony will take place on Sunday to remember Thomas Murphy and David Tobin, two young men who were killed almost 101 years ago in the fight for Irish freedom. Thomas Murphy from Ballylanders and David Tobin from Glenbrohane, were both killed by Crown forces on 1st January, 1921.

The Tobin and Murphy families have, with the help of locals, recently erected two small monuments at the sites where the two men were shot dead. Their families are planning a Mass on Sunday, December 5th, followed by an unveiling of each monument, in honour of their memories.

Mass will take place at 1pm in St Patrick’s Church, Glenbrohane, and the unveiling will take place afterwards nearby at each monument by family members, alongside Fr Joe Tynan. Covid restrictions-pending, there will be a gathering at Glenbrohane Community Hall for refreshments.

At the request of both families, this will be a non-political event.
