Coolagown commended on rainwater harvesting project
All eyes were on Coolagown this week as the Cork County Council Environment Department shared a video on the community’s rainwater harvesting project.
A project which sees rainwater collected and stored on the roof of the village church, the community designed and created the large-scale rainwater harvesting project with support from Cork County Council and the Community Environment Action Fund.
Rainwater collected is recycled locally, being pumped across a three-kilometre stretch of pipework to 15 taps located throughout the village.
“The whole community can freely use the harvested rainwater for watering plants in gardens and general household uses that are recommended for harvested rainwater. Well done to Coolagown community for such an extraordinary achievement. An inspiration for us all,” a spokesperson for Cork County Council said.
Cork County Council shared the video last week, encouraging the public to ‘ keep an eye’ out for details of the 2022 Community Environment Action Fund, the same fund that the Coolagown scheme was supported through. The video features scenes of Coolagown and its residents, the River Blackwater and the set-up of the rainwater harvesting system.
In 2016, the community in Coolagown were recognised for their work and were awarded the Irish Water Value Award (Village category) in the SuperValu Tidy Towns regional awards ceremony.
