St Colman’s surprise exit from Harty Cup

- PADDY RYAN

St Joseph’s Tulla 2-16 St Colman’s Fermoy 1-16 (aet)

A fancied St Colman’s side made their exit from the Munster SHC Harty Cup at Fermoy on Wednesday when losing out after extra time to St Joseph’s Tulla. The Fermoy side did well in the opening half and were in control up to the 56th minute when leading 0-12 to 0-7.

The Fermoy side had a 19 point win over Blackwater CS in round 1 and were fancied to make the knockout stages. Having won the Munster U16 and a half (Dean Ryan title) two years ago they were seen as having a very good blend at senior level with a very good sprinkling of Cork minors in their ranks.

However Tulla, who didn’t score from play in normal time, refused to give in and two frees by Sean Withycombe brought them back to within a goal in the dying moments. Deep in injury time Withycombe goaled from a free and the game finished level.

In the opening moments of extra time Ben Nyhan placed Ben Nodwell for a goal. The East Clare side defended very well with Adam Hogan, Oisin Clune and Darragh Keogh very effective. Fionn Hickey had their first score from play and Sean Withycombe followed with two pointed frees to level. Jamie Magnier had another fine point for Colmans. Sean Withycombe pointed again giving the Banner side the lead for the first time since the early minutes.

In the closing moments Oisin Clune and Conor O’Donnell worked well for Fionn Hickey who goaled. Oisin O’Connor put them 3 ahead in the second period of extra time and though Jamie Magnier brought Colman’s back to a single point. Late points by Sean Withycombe and Fionn Hickey helped their side to the quarter finals. Colmans were best served by Adam Walsh, Kyle Wallace, James O’Brien and Jamie Magnier.

Scorers for St Josephs : Sean Withycombe 1-8, Darragh Keogh 0-5. Fionn Hickey 1-2, Oisin O’Connor 0-1. St Colmans : Jamie Magnier 0-12 (0-9f. 0-2 ‘65s) Ben Nodwell 1-0, Adam Walsh, Gearoid O’Brien 0-1, Brendan Lehane 0-1.
