Year coming to an end

RESULTS

On Sunday afternoon our U14 ladies football team (Tigers) came up against a well organised Erin’s Own team in the East Cork A championship final. Fermoy were up against it from the off playing in to a very strong wind but great credit to Fermoy, they held out against some sustained pressure from Erin’s Own to finish the quarter only 3 points down. Unfortunately that pressure took its toll in the second quarter with Erin’s Own taking a sizeable lead in at halftime.

Fermoy came out fighting in the second half and really put it up to Erin’s Own in the third quarter, which was all the coaches asked of them at half-time, which they duly delivered by winning that quarter, with Shauna O’Driscoll showing great composure by scoring some lovely frees to stay in the game. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be Fermoy’s day.

We met an extremely well balanced, physically strong Erin’s Own team which is a huge advantage when playing football at this time of the year in cold, heavy conditions. They were worthy winners and champions in the end. This game draws our year to an end and we would just like to say a huge thank you to the girls for their work rate and commitment throughout the year and to the management and parents for time and support through the year. Well done girls and enjoy the break.

Fermoy team: S Power, E Lane, H Sjaberg, A O’Meara (C), E L Wall, T Harrington, S Carey, R O’Flynn, R Feehan, N Hegarty, S O’Driscoll (4 frees), E Lavery, C Noonan, S Kennedy, M Cloney and S Ring.

U16

On Thursday evening last we travelled to Cobh to play the locals in the U16 East Cork championship final. It was a bitterly cold evening but despite the conditions both sides served up a fantastic game of football. Fermoy opened brightly, and with some very well taken scores by Breann Power, Gemma O’Brien and Shauna O’Driscoll, enjoyed a 6 point lead at half-time.

Our girls were on top in defence with Ciara Clancy, Ava Murphy and Ella Burdett defending the fullback line really well. With Rachel O’Driscoll attacking from defence regularly and Sarah O’Connor and Ellen O’Mahony marking really well, Cobh struggled to score. Leah Donnellan and our captain Lisa Hartnett were having a real battle at midfield and we continued the second half where we left off, again with some great scores to lead early in the half by 9 points.

Eabha Corcoran, Roisin Fleming and Claire Linehan were winning loads of ball, with again Breann, Gemma and Shauna’s link-up play leading to some lovely scores. However Cobh started to thunder into the game at this stage. With Cara McCarthy playing superbly in goals, we managed to keep them at bay, leading at the final water break by 4 points. Aisling Duffy and Leah Nolan came on and were a threat, however 2 Cobh goals in the final quarter, despite our girls’ best efforts, left us heart-broken at the final whistle on the wrong side of a Fermoy 2-13 Cobh 4-9 scoreline.

Every one of the 17 girls who played on the night represented themselves and their club with pride and they deserve huge credit. This brings the year to an end, so a very well done to all of the girls throughout the year and thanks to the management and parents for all their co-operation and support. Enjoy the break and we will see you all next year.

Team was as follows: Cara McCarthy, Ella Burdett, Ava Murphy, Ciara Clancy, Rachel O’Driscoll, Sarah O’Connor, Ellen O’Mahony, Lisa Hartnett, Leah Donnellan, Roisin Fleming, Breann Power, Shauna O’Driscoll, Eabha Corcoran, Gemma O’Brien, Claire Linehan, Ashlinn Duffy and Leah Nolan.
