Fab four battle for George Ryan Trophy
The George Ryan Memorial Mixed Foursomes came to a very exciting finish last weekend when the pairing of Billy Timlin and Anne Dineen were pitted against Cillian Twomey and Liz O’Brien.
The Fab Four had played well throughout the preliminary rounds and with such steady golfers in the final it was bound to be a closely fought match and indeed it turned out to be nip and tuck all the way. But in a club match play final there can only be one winning team and Billy and Anne closed out the match for victory on the seventeenth. Having been down crossing the road to back nine they reeled off a series of pars from the fifteenth to take the coveted title. Commiserations to Cillian and Liz who fought hard and played a very sporting match. Well done to you all on reaching the final of the competition, the winning of which is one of Fermoy GC’s must sought after accolades.
The Club Mixed Foursomes is named in memory of the late George Ryan who ran the Friday Night Mixed Foursomes for many years. George and his late wife Frances were a lovely couple who are fondly remembered by all in the club who had the good fortune to have known them. It’s lovely to note that their daughter Frances Ryan-Hanlon is also a member of Fermoy GC, it’s great that the Ryan Family are still very much part of the club today.
MARGE AHERN WINS WEEKLY COMPETITION
The fourteen-hole voucher competition played Sunday 21st and Monday, November 19 was played in very pleasant conditions. Sunday was sunny and while there was a stiff northerly breeze it was nonetheless a lovely day considering it was late November.
Monday dawned to bright sunshine and the early morning ground frost burned off very quickly leaving a lovely albeit a rather chilly day for golf with barely a discernible wind. In first place was Marge Aherne (28) who played a very steady round and returned an excellent 32 points to secure victory. In second position was Thursday Scramble Ladies Co-ordinator Kathleen O’Regan (24) who had a fine 30 points. Third and fourth positions went to committee member Eileen O’Neill and Get into Golf Organiser Martha Brennan who both came home on 28 points with Eileen just pipping Martha on the back nine on countback.

THURSDAY LADIES
The fifteen ladies who arrived on Thursday 25th last were left in no doubt that winter had arrived as the temperature had plummeted and players required to be well wrapped up to ward off the elements. On the positive side it was a dry, crisp day and it was lovely to get out and make the most of it. In first place were Mary Wall, Pauline Hyland and Ber Hennebry 31.7 nett who finished their round with a birdie on our par 5 ninth. In second place were Mary Nyhan, Fiona Collier and Rita Mulvihill 32.5 nett and in third on 34.5 nett the team of Claire de Lacy, Olive Murphy and Liz O’Brien.
