A good win against a good side

U21 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINAL (2020) Glenville 5-13 Castlemartyr 3-11 (AET)

Glenville and Castlemartyr clashed in this delayed (2020) U21 football championship semi-final in a well prepared Caherlag pitch on Saturday evening last. Glenville opted to play against the strong wind in the opening half.

Both teams were slow to settle but Glenville did well to be ahead 2-01 to 2pts at the first water break. Our goals coming from Shane and Dan, with Ciaran O’Leary firing over the point. The second was a different story with Castlemartyr, buoyed with their county final win the previous week burst into the game and took over for the next 15 mins. The wind was strong and Castlemartyr played to their strengths and got some very good scores and went in ahead at the break 2.07 to 2.01.

Glenville needed a good start to the second half, and they got this with James kicking some great scores from play and frees. Shane banged in another goal and now the sides were level as we hit the second water break. Glenville were on top now and needed to drive it on. But Castlemartyr refused to give in and pointed with 10 mins to go and shortly after they followed up with another goal to go 4pts up.

However, Glenville responded with a brace from James and when Shane O’Reilly’s kicked a monstrous point from the 45, it left 1 point in it with time nearly up. We then had a few missed chances and with time running out, up stepped Sean in injury time to kick a beauty of a point and draw the game and send it to extra time.

Both teams were getting leggy at this stage and when Colin Cronin billowed the net it put breathing space between the sides. James pointed a free and Shane O’Regan kicked a good point again before James again converted a free. This left us 6pts up at halftime in extra time. Bodies were running on empty at this stage and Castlemartyr kicked a free to reduce the margin.

Scores were hard to come by now but with a minute remaining Shane made sure of the game when he hammered in another great goal to finally see off the resolute Castlemartyr challenge. This was a good win against a very good Castlemartyr side. We now go through to the final where we take on Erins Own in another tough assignment next weekend. Well done to the team and management.

DADS AND LADS

Dads and Lads is a social football and hurling programme for those keen to enjoy Gaelic games outside the traditional competitive structures of the GAA. The philosophy of GAA for Dads and Lads is all about participation and the camaraderie that only team sports can offer. The small-sided adapted games allow for incidental contact only (to minimise any risk of injury) so skills are to the fore over physicality. The games are self-governed – no referees.

We recently started a Dads and Lads football group in Glenville and it has proved a great success so far, with numbers increasing every night. It’s open to all and no previous experience of playing football is required. To sign up, or for more details contact John O’Connor our PRO on 085 -7102290.
