Work ongoing for Lismore Tidy Towns

-

Before the cold wintery weather set in last week the Lismore Tidy Towns work team and its CE worker Jim managed to get the following outdoor work completed, cutting back and weeding of the 3 planted areas at the palm tree bed on the New Way, removal of summer bedding plants from the 17 wall baskets on West Street, clearing out plants and weeding at the Monument, pruning perennials at the Bee & Butterfly corner West Street/ Bank Field and weeding the top of the Intreo wall.

Thanks to the members of Lismore Men’s Shed who are going to look after the planted area at Town Parks. This will save the Tidy Towns work and CE teams a lot of work over the year.

Great to see new Christmas lights going up in Lismore town and we wish the Christmas Lights Committee well in their endeavours and fundraising as this is again another voluntary group helping to bring brightness to people’s lives in those dark times.

In last week’s column it was stated that a deposit return scheme for bottles and cans is planned by the Government for autumn 2022. A national newspaper report last week announced that Lidl Ireland welcomed the success of its bottle and can scheme at its Glenageary, Co. Wicklow branch. The scheme was launched 11 weeks ago and according to Lidl its reverse vending machine has collected more than 64,000 plastic bottles and cans from customers and paid out €6,400 in vouchers-for every unit deposited in the vending machine customers received a 10 cent voucher in return with a maximum voucher limit of €2. It will be interesting to see what the Government will do to progress this initiative nationally

ECO TIP OF THE WEEK

This Christmas please try and support local producers. By consciously trying to support small suppliers and producers in your local community you will not only be minimising your carbon footprint, but making your spending a positive act for people living near you. The produce often tastes better too!
