Haven Hub to open its doors locally on Saturday

- MARIAN ROCHE

The Haven Hub in Mitchelstown is set to open its doors on Saturday, 11th December. The Hub is going to be a drop-in service for people who need to talk, or need an extra support, and will be manned by three trained volunteers in the bright and accessible Forrest Hall facility, located in New Square.

Every Saturday evening, from 7pm until 11pm, three trained volunteers will be on-hand to offer peer-to-peer support to people who are lonely, in distress or simply need someone to talk to. Any service users can be assured that their confidentiality is guaranteed.

The Haven Hub in Mitchelstown is the latest branch of a successful service to open that is currently in-situ in both Limerick and Waterford cities, as well as in Ennis.

SUPPORT LINE

The late opening hours of the Hub are intentional, as the purpose of the service is to provide support at night, when other support services are closed and anyone in distress has limited or no avenues to help. The notfor-profit organisation connects users with aftercare to “link people with longer term professional support when appropriate”.

If people are unable to attend in-person, or would prefer to chat to someone by phone, a phone line will also be operational between these hours. The number is 089 2618815, but users are asked to please note that this phoneline is only open from 7pm to 11pm on Saturday evenings, as it runs in conjunction with The Haven Hub opening hours.

Mitchelstown’s Carmel O’Gorman has been spearheading the campaign to open the facility in the town, and was very glad to announce the opening, particularly thanking the staff.

“I’d like to say a sincere thank you to all the volunteers, who are giving up their time to help others. We would like to tell everyone that the volunteers will treat everyone with empathy, and we will do our best to help them access other supports on their road to wellness”.

The Hub recently held a fundraising evening in The Firgrove Hotel, which was well attended by members of the community.
