Fermoy Farmers’ Market gets festive this weekend

- KATIE GLAVIN

Preparations are underway for Fermoy Farmers’ Market to roll in the festive season with their very own Christmas market kicking off on Friday night.

Setting the scene at Richmond House in Fermoy, the market will host around thirty stallholders between Friday’s market which begins at 6.30pm and on Saturday from 10am until 2pm.

Speaking with TheAvondhu, chairperson of Fermoy Farmers’ Market, Enda Joyce, said that the event has been in planning for the past few months.

With music from Fermoy Concert Band, Fermoy Youth Choir and visitors Lismore Choir, there will be plenty of carol singing and some rocking around the Christmas tree. In fact, you can even buy your Christmas tree at the market over the weekend!

As well as all the regular delights of the market, visitors will be treated to some guest traders joining the market for the weekend. With an array of locally produced goods on offer, there is no better time to get the Christmas gift list ticked off, and all without the stress of city traffic and parking.

Last year, Fermoy Farmers’ Market held a Christmas market, however bad weather and the advent of Covid-19 slightly hampered the event, according to Mr Joyce.

This time around, Mr Joyce says that two dates for the occasion will lend more opportunity for stallholders, performers, visitors and customers to make the best of the market.

Fermoy Farmers’ Market is organised on a voluntary basis and despite the challenges of Covid has seen tremendous local support.

POTENTIAL FOR GROWTH

Commenting on the market and the ongoing work of the committee and traders, Mr Joyce said he is confident that 2022 will see positive growth.

“Fermoy is such a wonderful town and truly deserving of a strong, competitive market. We see wonderful markets in the likes of Douglas and Midleton and believe that Fermoy has the same potential with local support.

“The public has shown great support to the market. We have our regulars that we see all the time, but it has been difficult reaching out to a bigger audience with Covid, but we are continuing to grow and reaction to the market has been very positive,” he said.

Evidence of this growth is seen in the formation of a Fermoy Farmers’ Market committee.

“We are growing and by having a committee it gives everyone some responsibility and it’s not all just on one person,” Mr Joyce added.

The Christmas market, the last Farmers’ market of 2021, will run at Richmond House, Fermoy across two days this weekend, Friday, December 10 from 18.30-21.30 and Saturday, December 11 from 10am-14.00. Fully accessible venue with limited parking on site.
