Fermoy CMWS snooker hall celebrating 115 years

-

The members and newly elected committee under the chairmanship of well-known publican and snooker player Kevin Corcoran of Fermoy Catholic Men and Women’s Society (formally the CMWS Hall) are looking forward to celebrating the club’s 115th anniversary on Saturday, December 20. The hall, as it is known to all its members past and present, has seen many changes over the years and has always remained open even during world wars but it took the Covid-19 pandemic Government restrictions to close the club earlier this year for a number of months.

But with the restrictions now being slowly lifted the snooker and pool club is now open again. Membership is very strong and the club are hoping to send 3 teams to the Munster championships in Killarney in January 2022. This year’s A team is as follows - William Cahill, Robbie Donavan, Kevin Corcoran, Daithi Whealan and Tom Ahern. The club’s B team are Darren Bryan, Liam Hayes, Jack Newman, James Devens Hire and Kenneth Flynn. The club’s C team is still not fully decided as there is a Round Robin tournament on at present to decide the final make-up of the team. This will be decided in the next week or two.

While the club was closed due to the Covid-19 restrictions the committee went about securing a grant towards the repainting of the front of the building from Cork County Council’s streetscape painting, signage and improvement scheme. This work was recently carried out, with the painting and the new signage it has given a new, fresh look to the building. Also before the club reopened we re-covered all the snooker and pool tables and some paint works were done with some other small repairs carried out in the club.

PATRICK FLOOD FIRST TO BOW OUT OF THE U21S CHRISTMAS SNOOKER TOURNAMENT

U21s Christmas 115th anniversary snooker tournament is now underway with the draw taking place in the club last Sunday, December 5. Twenty-eight players are taking part in this year’s Christmas tournament, all the matches will be the best of 3 frames with the finals taking place on Monday, December 20.

One of the first shock exits of the Christmas tournament was Pa Flood who lost his match to Arthur McDonagh 2-1. Arthur won the first frame but Pa Flood wasn’t going to go down without a fight and drew level with Arthur on the black ball in the second frame. The third frame was very close until the colours, when Arthur went on to win. There will be more on the results of the first and second round matches in next week’s report.

The Cork Snooker Leagues started recently and the club have home and away matches every week in the club, the results for the last number of weeks are as follows - Fermoy B beat Fermoy A 7-5 AOH(B) drew against Fermoy (A) 6-6 Youghal (B) beat Fermoy (A) 7-5 AOH (B) beat Fermoy (8) 7-3 Youghal (B) beat Fermoy (8) 7-3. This week’s match is Fermoy (A) against AOH (A), this will be a deciding match for Fermoy as they must win to stay in the league. We wish the team the best of luck this week and will report on the results next week.
