In the senior room in our school, we have started a 6-week Irish Sign Language course with Karol and his interpreter’s Susan and Valeria.

There are different types of Sign Language around the world. In Ireland it is I S L for Irish Sign Language, in Britain it’s called B S L for British Sign Language and in America It’s called A S L for American Sign Language etc.

At the start of the course, we learned single words such as hello, girl, boy, different animals, colors, days of the week, months of the year and many more. During the middle of the 6 weeks course, we started to learn more like the hobbies we do, different food and our date of birth.

As the course is coming to an end we have learned about how deaf people go about their everyday lives. Deaf people use flashing light and vibrations for things such as doorbells, or if their baby is crying the baby monitor will flash or vibrate as well.

Before all this new technology was created deaf people used a string outside their door that people could pull on, and a flap would start flapping inside the house or they would tie a loose string around the baby’s hand or ankle and attach it to the parents wrist as well, so if the baby is crying or being fussy they will feel the baby moving.

Now we are heading into our last week of the course, and we really enjoyed it.
