Good man Shane

-

Last Sunday’s game was preceded by a minute’s silence in honour of the passing of Mary Ellen Noonan, beloved grandmother of player and one of the founding committee members of the team. All at Brew Boys United pass our condolences onto the family. May she rest in peace.

A tough battle ensued once the whistle was blown to start our match v 4th place Cork County Council last Sunday morning. It was a very even first half with chances at either end. Captain Mikey Aherne was superb in centre half and led the team from the back throughout. The better of the chances in the opening half fell to the council and Shane O’Brien was forced to make some terrific saves to keep us level going into the break.

The Brew Boys started the second half knowing they needed a win to keep the pressure on league leaders Lions Den. Unfortunately, despite heavy pressure from our lads, we were dealt two hammer blows one after the other. One of our top players Eric Roche had to be replaced due to injury and we conceded a disappointing goal from a corner that even the on-form Shane O’Brien couldn’t keep out. 1-0 down and disaster had struck.

With our resilience and determination being tested, Seán McCarthy and Cristian Veste were introduced to the team. It didn’t take long for their presence to be felt as after a diagonal ball was played through to Cristian he made no mistake when faced with the Council goalkeeper and buried the ball into the bottom left corner securing his first goal for the Brew Boys.

Momentum was now on our side and when the ever-dangerous Matthew Quish found the ball on the wing he whipped it across to the head of Gavan Quirke who beautifully knocked it into the path of Seán McCarthy who absolutely rocketed the ball into the back of the net securing a 2-1 lead. Seán is 2nd top scorer from play on the team only behind Gavan Quirke and what a time it was to get his 6th goal of the campaign.

The Brew Boys were not content with sitting back and defending their lead and were unlucky not to add to their tally with Matthew Quish very unlucky not to get a goal. If he keeps getting into the space like last Sunday, there is no doubt he will be on the scoresheet before long. Great debut for him.

The work rate and fitness levels shown by all was exemplary and the determination to get back from being 1-0 to taking all three points was a very proud moment for all involved. All credit to the Council for being great opposition and we wish you the best of luck for the rest of the season, particularly next Saturday when they face top of the table Lions Den. Do us a favour lads!

There was no question about man of the match. We could have been 2 or 3 down if it wasn’t for the heroics of goalkeeper Shane O’Brien. Well done Shane.
