The Avondhu

Great day out on Sunday last

-

The IFF/FMC 6km road race was held on Sunday, January 23, under very fine conditions. This was the second race this year on the BHAA calendar, the first being the ESB Cross#Country earlier in the month. It is about a year since we had a race at Little Island and this road race attracted a large entry of 330 athletes from different companies and it’s especially popular as a lot of the course goes through the Eastgate Business Park, away from the traffic.

Once again the community hall was the centre of the action for registrations and picking up your number, but no refreshments after the race as Covid would make people very reluctant to gather inside just to eat cake. However, there was a great coffee dock outside the hall and plenty of runners took advantage of the refreshments there!

Winners on the day were Gavid O’Rourke of Eli Lilly in 1st place in a time of 18.35, with Jeremy O’Donovan also of Eli Lilly 2nd home in 19.18, and Aidan Noone of Department of Education 3rd home in 19.31. Some great times there. The women’s race had three superb runners in the top three slots, with Sinead O’Connor, Department of Education 1st in 20.39, Martina Kiely, Department of Education 20.44 and Sharon Rynne of Kepak in 21.55.

Avondhu Motor Factors had a good turnout of athletes for this race, with seven of our ladies competing and five men. On the women’s side we had Joan Ennis, 1st O/55, Terri Hennessey 3rd O/40, Sheila Maggorian, Linda Curtin, Angela O’Mahony and Maggie Dunne 1st O/70. Mike Ennis, Johnny Delaney and Mike Pratt scored 3rd prize in the B category teams, Des White finished well, and Tony Dunne was 1st O/80. All in all it was a very successful race for Avondhu Motor Factors, and we want to thank Mike Ennis for once again sponsoring our team. Thanks also to the BHAA for organising the event, and to all helpers and stewards on the day who ensured that all runners got around safely.

UPCOMING RACES

The Jansen race, due to be help on 13th February, has been cancelled, so the next #BHAA race on the calendar will be the MTU race on 6th March. This 5km race was a new addition to the Cork BHAA calendar in 2020. MTU (formerly called CIT) are always well represented at every race so it’s great to have their race again this year. The route is the same as the Rebel Run 5k, finishing on the CIT track itself.
