GREAT CLUBMAN IS LAID TO REST

-

A pall of gloom descended on the community of Shanballymore when we learned of the death of Michael O’Donovan.

Michael was a great clubman, having played alongside his two brothers, Billy and the late Ned with his son Michael Jnr picking up the mantle and was part of the All-Ireland winning team of 2015.

Michael was a member of the 1967 U16 hurling team who defeated Ballyhea in the final to claim the North Cork title. Even though championship honours alluded us, Michael played on teams that won many tournaments.

Michael’s playing career might have been curtailed due to injury, however, he went on to build a very successful business in auctioneering, replacing his late father Michael. This led to Michael becoming our club sponsor for many years, with his name still proudly displayed today on the club gear.

The Shanballymore Club will always be indebted to his generosity and support throughout the years, with Michael always being a loyal follower of the Black and Red.

In honour of Michael, the club formed a Guard of Honour at his funeral in the Shanballymore Parish Church with his coffin draped in the Black and Red.

To his wife Marian, sons Michael, Des and Edward and daughter, Jean; daughters-in-law Olivia and Sarah, son-in-law Dan and Edward’s partner Orla; grandson Michael Óg and granddaughter Harriett; brothers Fr Billy and John, and extended family – the club offers its sincerest condolences.
