Ennis prove too strong in Munster final
Last Sunday, our grade 6 team played against Ennis in the final of the Munster Winter League Phase I final in Nenagh. The result we were hoping for was not to be. However, we knew Ennis had a good team and this proved to be the case.
The Clare side got off to a great start, winning both singles matches with a set to spare, meaning Mitchelstown had to win the mixed doubles to keep the final alive. Having lost the first set 7-6, a brave effort in the second set by our team was rewarded with a 7-6 win to level the match. Ennis regrouped for the third set and saw out the game with a 6-3 victory. The result of the tie was settled, Ennis winning the first three matches with just two matches to play. The doubles matches were shared between the two teams, Mitchelstown winning the men’s doubles and Ennis successful in the ladies doubles. The final result was 4-1 to Ennis. We congratulate Ennis on their victory over a strong Mitchelstown team. We commiserate with our team of Barbara Pigott (captain), Clair Nolan, Lee Kielthy and Padraic Slattery. It was a wonderful journey to qualify from the group stages to get to the final. These games will certainly stand to our players and will give the incentive to our members to continue the positive momentum that this team has brought us, into the Munster Winter League Phase II. We thank the supporters who travelled to Nenagh for the final and to the other matches during the Winter League Phase I. It’s onwards and upwards for the club, as we look ahead to the Munster Winter League Phase II competition.
