Car boot followers still focused on Rathcormac

- JOHN AHERN

It’s business as usual for the car boot fraternity, with interest in this particular pursuit showing no sign of waning.

At the upper end of the car boot Premier League is Rathcormac - a location that’s stood by the concept through thick and thin. It’s a formula that hasn’t altered much over the years and at one level, it’s remarkable that very substantial crowds continue to return (and pay) to see run of the mill merchandise.

When you inquire, you’re told that people find it interesting and of course, there’s always the hope of stumbling across ‘car boot gold’ - whatever that might be.

NEW SETTING

Those who are out of the car boot loop, may not realise that the Rathcormac Car Boot Sale has a new location - in community property adjacent to the new national school (Scoil Bhride). Thanks to ease of access and ample car parking, the site is particularly suitable. There are elaborate plans for this sprawling location, which will hopefully come to fruition in the months and years ahead.

EARLY BIRDS

Car boot vendors are on the move from day break - as a result those on ‘the hunt’ also have their alarm clocks set. Early rising is also compulsory for the all important car boot volunteers, without whom the project wouldn’t work. This group are on site from 7am to oversee the operation.

CASH IS KING AT CAR BOOTS

Car boot sales such as Rathcormac are still debit/credit card free zones. The breakdown of the fee structure is as follows: €10 for cars, €15 for vans and €20 for trucks. Inflation doesn’t seem to have impacted in this part of the country either as individuals entering the market only have to part with €2 (also in cash). After that, you’re left to your own devices.

MEETING AND GREETING

Away from the commercial side of things, there’s a strong social dimension to car boot sales and for years, people have looked forward to ‘meeting at the car boot sale’. As well as being an inexpensive day out, the event

is relaxed and family friendly.

GOOD FOR RATHCORMAC

At a time when a lot of fundraising options have been curtailed, car boot sales continue to raise significant monies, all of which are channelled into community projects. With Covid19 related restrictions all but lifted and a long hot summer to look forward to, the expectation is that 2022 will be a bumper year for everyone associated with Rathcormac Car Boot Sale.
