Kilfinane CC encouraging local tourism
Kilfinane Community Council is delighted to announce the recent placement of six new signs in Kilfinane and the surrounding areas of Glenbrohane, Ballyorgan, Magner’s Mountain, Glenroe and Ardpatrick. The installation of the signs has followed a period of hard work by our community council, and we hope you take the time to visit each of them and encourage visitors to the area to do the same!
The idea behind ‘The Beauty that Surrounds Us’ came from treasurer with Kilfinane Community Council, Tommy O’Sullivan, a few years back. Tommy wanted to do something to show others the heritage and scenery within our local area and to encourage locals and visitors to spend more time in our locality. Most of the signs are located along the Ballyhoura Way, so visitors will pass them as they walk it. Places of interest shown include Kilfinane Moat, Seefin, Kilflynn Church, views from the King’s Chair at the top of Sliabh Riagh, Darragh Cemetery and many more.
There is a QR code on each map which links to information on a page called ‘The Beauty that Surrounds Us’ on Kilfinane Coshlea Historical Society’s webpage on ouririshheritage.org. To use this, download the QR Scanner app, open the app and hold it up to the QR code on the signs, then just click on the link to read about places of interest. This content can be added to in the future, and if anyone has information they would like to share on the website, please feel free to get in touch with any of the members of Kilfinane Coshlea Historical Society. Tommy is also available to talk to other communities about promoting their own local areas and helping to extend this out further.
There has been huge commitment of time and work from Kilfinane Community Council members over the last six months in bringing this project to completion. Such works involved creating the content, taking and sourcing photos, and identifying local places of interest for people to visit on these local area maps. A special thanks to the committee members involved – Ruth McAuliffe, chairperson; Tommy O’Sullivan, treasurer; Dave Santorum and Louise MacAvin, the assistant secretary.
We would also like to thank Finbarr Connolly and Morgan Murphy for all of the local historical information they have contributed, and the accuracy and attention to detail and to Finbarr for writing the website content. Thanks also to the TÚS workers for installing all of the signs.
This project was funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme. Thanks also to Limerick City and County Council for their assistance, Da Vinci Creative for their work, and to anyone else who helped out along the way.
