New interactive IRA Companies Map launched
From Malin Head to Mizen Head, a new interactive map gives users the unprecedented opportunity to explore over 2,000 IRA companies across the island of Ireland from the War of Independence to the Civil War.
University College Cork (UCC) recently launched the map of Ireland’s 2,181 IRA companies from the end of War of Independence through to the beginning of the Irish Civil War.
The ‘interactive story map’, drawn from the Nominal Roll IRA membership files in the Military Service Pensions Collection, is the latest edition to the Irish Revolution website - an online educational collaboration between UCC and the Irish Examiner, for anyone interested in the Irish Revolutionary period.
The site - theirishrevolution.ie - contains interactive research tools and teaching resources drawn from the hugely successful ‘Atlas of the Irish Revolution’ produced by UCC. These include maps and feature articles about the Irish Revolutionary period, resources for secondary schools, conference proceedings and regular news updates. Also, an updated Cork Fatality Register, which now includes details of all those killed in County Cork during the Irish Civil War, as well as the War of Independence period.
Dr Donal O Drisceoil and Dr John Borgonovo of UCC School of History were joined by cartographers Charlie Roche and Mike Murphy, and Cécile Gordon, Senior Archivist and Project Manager of the Military Service (1916-1923) Pensions Collection Project earlier in January, where the research and construction of the IRA Companies Map was discussed.
