Chrissy O’Farrell tops the field

-

There was an excellent amount of entries again for last week’s competition with the number of ladies currently playing weekly far out weighing those in the same month in previous years. The fine weather we have experienced over the last few weeks did help enormously, but there is little doubting the lack of play due to the pandemic closures since March 2020 has helped get us all more motivated and enthusiastic when it comes to winter golf. There is a lot of truth in the old saying “hunger is a good sauce” many of us are taking every opportunity to get back on the fairways and enjoy golf again. Chrissy O’Farrell (22) topped the field having returned an excellent score of 33 points, just ahead of Liz O’Brien (26) 32 points.

MELLERICK’S SPRING LEAGUE

The ladies Spring League begins this coming Sunday, February 13 and there has been a huge entry which will make for a very exciting competition. The team draws have taken place and all details are posted on the notice board in the locker room. Many thanks to Mary McCarthy and Carrie Gormley who have taken on the task of organising the league and compiling the results. Best of luck to all those taking part.

THURSDAY LADIES

Upon their arrival at the club on Thursday last players were a little disappointed to find a mist had descended, fortunately the weather cleared quickly and the fifteen ladies completed their nine holes in rather more pleasant conditions than they had first anticipated. In first place with a great score of 29.8 nett were Eileen O’Neill, Mary Wall and Mary Deane. Second position went to Ger O’Sullivan, Marie Dunne and Liz O’Brien 31.8 nett and in third place on count back were Elizabeth Geaney, Audrey Cremen and Bridget Joyce 34.4 nett.

MIKE’S TYRES SPRING LEAGUE

The time sheet was fully booked for last Saturday and Sunday as those who had also entered the Spring League went out in their droves to get their first card in for their team. This year the format is teams of three players and the result will be based on best four cards out of the six weeks for each player. Overall winner, second, third, and payment of the €10 entry will be by means of BRS. We send our sincere thanks to Mike’s Tyres for their very generous sponsorship.

THURSDAY SENIOR GENTS

There was another big turnout for last Thursday’s

men’s seniors with forty four members attending on a dry, sunny but breezy day. As Ray outlined following our golf, forty four has become the magic number for 2022, it’s the third time in the last four events since our return in January that this number of players has togged out. The strong breeze we encountered had an effect on scoring with all the winning scores being a couple of shots higher than last weeks. Top of the pile were the fancied team of Tom O’Keeffe, Liam Butler, Michael Reidy and Mark Troy whose gross 37 converted into 27.4 nett to win by point three from Michael Caples, Ray Ennis, Tim Buckley and James Ronan. Third place, on countback, on 28 nett went to Dave Hoare, Jim O’Leary, Dan Galvin and Charlie McCarthy.
