CLUB AGM TAKES PLACE
The AGM of Shanballymore GAA Club took place recently in the village community centre. The last 12 months were challenging both on and off the pitch as the pandemic loomed throughout 2021.
Outgoing Chairman Eddie Fitzgerald began proceedings by welcoming everyone to the 2021 AGM noting it was a positive step to be able to hold the meeting in traditional format this year and he continued his address with the Chairman’s Report.
“As Chairman I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who was involved in club operations and activities throughout 2021.
CLUB OFFICERS
Firstly, I would like to thank all club officers, members of various committees and those who attend our club meetings for the tremendous work they did undertaking their roles throughout the past year. Without their commitment, time and dedication the success of club operations and activities would not be possible.
MANAGEMENT TEAM AND PLAYERS
I would like to thank Eamonn Fitzgerald and his fellow selectors Richard McCarthy and Pat Walsh in hurling and Bobby Sheedy, Mike Sheedy and Richard McCarty in football for the substantial time and effort they put into training and preparing our junior teams.
Unfortunately, it was a tough year for our hurlers with defeats in all three championships. Our footballers were on the wrong end of narrow defeats in county championships. However, the year did end on a positive note with our footballers retaining North Cork Junior B football championship honours defeating neighbours Abbey Rovers.
This is a fantastic achievement, the fourth title for the majority of this bunch of players and a just reward for the effort and sacrifices they gave again this year to represent our club. Their dedication to the club has to be admired and is appreciated by all club members. Ye are great ambassadors for the club always representing the ‘ red and black’ with pride and honour. I hope we can progress further in the county championship next year and bring a county back to our village. I would like to wish all management and players the very best of luck for the year ahead.
CLUB REFEREES
I would like to thank Brian Murphy and Dave Twomey for representing the club throughout the 2021 season.
FIRST AID
I would like to express my gratitude to Lorraine Palmer for her time and dedication to the vital role of providing first aid at matches again this year.
JERSEY CARE
Mag Palmer once again took excellent care of the club jerseys throughout the 2021 season. We thank you for continuing to take on this role and always having the jerseys in perfect condition for games.
CLUB SPONSOR
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our main club sponsor Michael O’Donovan (RIP) of Sherry Fitzgerald O’Donovan for his continued support.
CLUB FACILITIES
A special word of thanks to Mick O’Keeffe and to Mike Irwin for their excellent work in maintaining and upkeeping our facilities. During the year Mick retired from the role. He still however is the first person I would ring if something urgently needs to be done and Mick is still obliging as ever never leaving the club down. I would like to wish best in his retirement. Thanks Mick!
Thanks to Timmy Fitzgibbon, Mick O’Keeffe, Pat Walsh, John Murphy and Neilius O’Reilly for assisting with hosting matches at our venue and to Shaun, Kenneth, Eamonn and Jerome for operating the scoreboard during bigger games. (Apologies if I have omitted any members here)
THE CLUB LOTTO
Our weekly club lotto continues to be a major success. The lotto committee at this stage seems to be a well oiled machine working efficiently and effectively on a weekly basis, collecting tickets on time and making themselves available on Monday nights. Well done to all involved. Tim Fitzgibbon, Noel Roche, Mag Palmer, Mick Sheedy, Mary O’Regan, Noreen Burke, John Murphy, Neilius O’Reilly, Brian O’Regan, Michelle Burke, Helen O’Reilly, Catherine Donegan and anyone else who sells tickets on behalf of the club.
During the year Mag stepped down as coordinator and I would like to express my gratitude to Helen O’Reilly for taking up the role with great ease.
The lotto has even greater potential to be more successful and I encourage all members to give it their full support by encouraging more patrons to join the draw, and by players selling three tickets minimum weekly.
I would like to take the opportunity here to thank Shaun Cronin on his great work in continuing to promote our lotto and all club activities on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
JUVENILE CLUBS
I would like to thank the dedicated members of our juvenile clubs (Shanballymore and St Dominic’s) who put countless hours into training the youth of the village.
Brian Sheedy (chairperson) and his team at Shanballymore Juvenile GAA Club must be congratulated for their achievements throughout the and seeing the number of kids training on our pitch especially during the summer months is a very encouraging sight for the future.
Dave Twomey (chairperson) and his team at St Dominic’s must also be congratulated for the work they have put into developing the skills of players U12 - U21. They achieved great success again this year winning six trophies. There seems to be good harmony between each community and long may it continue. These players are the future and I would encourage everyone to support both our juvenile clubs in any way possible.
SHANBALLYMORE NS
I would like to thank John Walsh and the staff of Shanballymore N.S. on the work they do in promoting Gaelic games in our primary school. Hopefully Sciath na Scol competitions will get up and running again soon for these children.
MEMBERSHIP / CORK REBEL BOUNTY DRAW
The format of Cork County Board Draw changed last year under the new name ‘Rebel Bounty Draw’. This format change required us to sell a minimum of 45 subscriptions (rising to 55 in 2022) before any money is redirected back to us. As a result of this new requirement the executive committee decided to merge club and Rebel Bounty Draw membership into one, on a one year trial basis. The continuation of this will be up for discussion later. Our subscription to the draw increased from 40 to 91 members in 2021 with this decision.
DEVELOPMENT
Our Development Committee provided the club with a development plan, which included the phased development of 1) juvenile pitch 2) hurling wall and 3) walkway. On the back of this the club applied for funding under the Sports Capital Grant this year, and we are still awaiting the outcome of this application at time of writing.
DEFIBRILLATOR TRAINING
I would like to thank Catherne Ryan for training and certifying six club members (Jimmy, Haulie, Eoin, Robert, Jerome and Lorraine) on the use of a defibrillator.
CONDOLENCES AND WELL WISHES
I would like to offer our condolences to anyone connected with Shanballymore GAA Club who lost loved ones throughout 2021. I would like to wish everyone good health in these unprecedented times and on behalf of everyone here present wish our club man Dan Roche a speedy recovery”
