Legal proceedings initiated over Mitchelstown buildings
Legal proceedings have been initiated against the owners of numbers 49 and 50 on Upper Cork Street, Mitchelstown, for non-compliance with notices fixed upon them in early December, writes Marian Roche.
Last week, the council confirmed that they had given the owners of both buildings a ‘ very limited’ time extension to complete demolition of the individual buildings. As no work has been undertaken to date, the council has now initiated legal proceedings.
The collapse of 49 Upper Cork Street, which was bought for €61,000 in an online auction in September 2020, also impacted on the adjacent building (No. 50). The lower storey of No. 50 was actively used as a hair studio until the end of March 2021, when the business moved to Lower Cork Street. The upper storeys were residential units up until the day that No. 49 Upper Cork Street partially collapsed, according to one source.
In January, councillors in the area had raised concerns about visibility in the area at the pedestrian crossings, but the council confirmed they were satisfied with this aspect. However, they stated a request has been made to the public lighting department, that general lighting in the area may be upgraded ‘when resources allow’.
