Old water pipes to be replaced in Castletownroche
Old water mains are set to be replaced on Close Road in Castletownroche, east of the village national school.
The works, to be carried out by Irish Water in partnership with Cork County Council, will commence in late February and will provide a more reliable supply and reduce high levels of leakage.
Speaking about the project, Paul Moroney from Irish Water said that the works will bring ‘all-round improvement’ to water quality.
“Replacing these old and problematic pipes in Castletownroche, which had a history of bursting, will reduce the drinking water lost by leakage and will bring an all-round improvement to water quality for the local community,” he said.
Carried out as part of Irish Water’s National Leakage Reduction Programme, works will be delivered by Ward and Burke Ltd and are expected to be completed by late June.
New water service connections will be laid from the public water main to the customers’ property boundaries. Where the existing service connections on the public side are lead, these will be replaced as part of the improvement works.
NEWS WELCOMED
Cork East TD James O’Connor, welcomed news of the safer water supply for the village.
“I welcome the positive news from Irish Water who are placing old water pipes near Castletownroche National School. This is badly required by many houses which are currently in place and could possibly allow extra houses to be built in the near future,” Deputy O’Connor said
Glanworth councillor Frank O’Flynn also welcomed the news, as he noted that old water pipes in Castletownroche had been troublesome and saw a number of breaks in recent times.
“This is good news for Castletownroche and will ensure a high quality water supply to meet the present and future needs of the village,” Cllr O’Flynn said.
Pointing to an ongoing housing development in the area, Cllr O’Flynn noted that this was progressing well and an upgrade to water pipes locally will be an advantage to continued development. According to Mr O’Flynn, contractors delivering the works have a positive track record, having also completed works in Glanworth, Doneraile and Killavullen.
ROAD CLOSURE & WATER INTERRUPTION
To complete the works efficiently and safely in Castletownroche, the Close Road will be closed from the Castletownroche NS junction to the cross at Oaklands from late February until late June 2022.
“We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause. Whilst the works are taking place near Castletownroche National School, we aim to not disrupt any traffic on a school run,” Paul Moroney of Irish Water said.
“The works may involve some short-term water interruptions and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours notice before any planned water interruptions,” he continued.
Westbound traffic will continue through Oaklands and join the N72/Castletownroche Road at Monanimy.
Eastbound traffic coming from Castletownroche will take the N72 to Monanimy and take the right turn toward Oaklands. Diversions will be signposted on approach.
