Love is all around us – it is called a sports development grant provision

- CLUB SPONSOR Howard Farm Feeds.

Congratulations to the local GAA clubs and others that were successful in their sports development grant application, filed back in 2021, rewarded with a grant provision last Friday.

A sports development grant gives a fantastic impetus to a project and while the amount of work in assembling the application is considerable, so would be trying to raise the amount of the grant provisions locally.

Grants were provided to the following North Cork and neighbouring clubs of Killavullen; Ballyclough GAA Club - Project: Astro Turf and Hurling Wall – Award amount. €76,672. Ballyhooly Community Sports field Ltd - Project: Pitch Drainage - Award amount. €148,798. Castletownroche Community Centre Ltd - Project: AstroTurf Lighting and Equipment - Award amount. €7,786. Kildorrery GAA Club- Project: Installation of GAA posts and CCTV – Award amount- €10,000. Kilworth GAA Club: Project – Fit out of Gym and Dressing Rooms – Award amount €114,176. Milford GAA Club: Project – Security fencing and Necessary drainage works – Award amount €70,352. Mitchelstown Community Centre Ltd: Project – Sports Equipment– Award amount €100,169.

Mourne Abbey Community Council: Project – Maintenance and Sports Equipment building– Award amount €58,500. Nagle Rice Community school – Project: Gym Equipment: - Award amount - €46,630. Park Utd AFC – Project; - Club Masterplan Phase 1All weather soccer field- Award amount – €150,000. Rathluirc GAA – Project: - Floodlighting system – Award amount - €122,399.

There was also a regional development provision of €150,000 to develop a running track and sports ground in Mallow.

With considerable amount of funding also being provided to facilities in Glenville, Rathcormac, Watergrasshill and Castlelyons, all of these host clubs and community groups will certainly be busy in providing some funds of their own, to enable the works to start.

Killavullen GAA did not apply for any funding in this raft of applications, as we have a grant provision for 2018 that we have not drawn down yet, due to planning issues, with our proposed dressing rooms.

Another casual observation on the grants awards was that community associations and multi-sport facilities were very successful in the scoring system, which decides these grant allocations. Having a field invested in the GAA may not be the optimum position to take, even if the predominant activity in the field is GAA, at the moment.

Grants from the Central council / Munster Council / Cork GAA have dried up, and would not in the same ballpark as the Sports Development Grants. Final point is that these grants can only be granted to a group, if you owe the property. If you are considering buying, buy the property first, then apply for a grant later to develop. Further food for thought, in Killavullen.

TIMMY KINSELLA – APPRECIATION

The ever reliable, genial Timmy Kinsella is retiring from the Killavullen Community Employment scheme on Wednesday of this week, and boy, will we miss the many, many jobs that Timmy did for us in the GAA Grounds.

If Killavullen GAA ground was always presented in immaculate condition for games and it has received rave reviews in that last number of years from visiting teams, and for our own training sessions, it was because Timmy took pride in what he did.

The grass was not just cut, there was a pattern to the cut and the weeds were removed so that they would not flourish again.

It was Timmy who came up with any number of suggestions to improve the place, cutting and shaping the parking area, trimming of the banks, updating the signs and so much more, and he worked diligently to make that happen. Preparing the field for an U12 game was as important to Timmy as preparing the field for a North Cork final – it was just his professional pride that. He needed to know what games were coming up and he began preparing 2 weeks out, and more, so that it was pristine on the day. Timmy was our eyes and ears about the place, and he looked out for everyone in the pitch area.

We wish Timmy a very long, pleasant, and fulfilled retirement – he came as a stranger, he left as a dear friend – that is so much more, than just a job. Thanks Timmy.

MOTTO FOR THE WEEK

Dreams don’t work unless you do. The difference between winners and losers is often the perseverance that goes into achieving that dream- attributed to John C Maxwell, American author, speaker, and pastor who has written many books primarily focusing on leadership.
