Outing to Mitchelstown

-

Funcheon Valley Golf Society got what will hopefully be a normal 2022 underway by playing the popular 15 hole old course at Mitchelstown. After 2 years of Covid-19 interruptions it is was a nice change to see our old friend Mother Nature threaten this fixture instead! Despite an orange weather warning for rain the golf went ahead and was played in very mild but windy conditions, the only thing blowing into town was Storm Michael, or in this case ‘Michaels’ - Fogarty and English!

Out in the first group Michael Fogarty returned a great score of 36 points. However, he faced an anxious wait as another Mitchelstown member Michael English also returned 36 points, the numbers were crunched by Mike Lyons and John Cotter (himself 4th) and Michael Fogarty was declared the winner on a countback. It is a testament to the standard of golf in Funcheon Valley that 8 players broke 30 points in very tough conditions.

With the Mitchelstown Golf Club restaurant fully open again it was back to the clubhouse for the fine cuisine and the first AGM since November 2019. After much experience of victory speeches Michael Fogarty was in fine form, he thanked his playing partners on the day, the course staff for getting the course in such good condition despite the adverse weather during the week, finally he thanked John and the rest of the committee for organising the outing. Secretary John Cotter opened the AGM by saying that captain Don and president Billy have set the world record for longest serving officers and must supply 3 prizes on their respective days! He also welcomed new members John Lineen, Sean Buckley, Kieran Casey and Tim Doody to the society.

Captain Don awarded the prizes as follows: 1st Michael Fogarty 36 points (countback). 2nd Michael English 36 points. 3rd John O’Brien 32 points (countback). 4th John Cotter 32 points. 5th Eamon McGrath 32 points. 6th Bernard Caffrey 31 points (countback). 7th Oliver Walsh 31 points. 8th Sean Buckley 31 points. Nearest the Pin 7th Pat Biggane. Nearest the Pin 13th Pat Biggane. Next outing will be Youghal on 9th April.
