Suspended sentence for local councillor

- MARIAN ROCHE

Castletownroche Councillor Frank Roche, has been served with a suspended jail sentence following a conviction for the assault of his brother and nephew.

Cllr Roche had denied the charges from an incident which occurred in January 2020 at Ballyadeen, and were partially recorded on his nephew Colm Roche’s phone.

In November 2021, Cllr Roche was convicted of assaulting his brother David Roche and nephew Colm Roche, and using threatening language relating to the incident. Judge Alec Gabbett, at a sitting of Fermoy District Court on Monday, imposed a four month sentence which is suspended for 20 months.

In his judgement, he noted the work that Cllr Roche had done in the community, but the ‘ most troubling’ aspect of the report on the defendant is that he ‘ shows little or no remorse’.

Cllr Roche is an independent councillor, representing the Fermoy Municipal District with Cork County Council.
