- KATIE GLAVIN

Gaelscoil de hÍde in Fermoy were commended this week during the Northern Committee Meeting, with the school being used as a ‘Green Schools Case Study’ within the environmental report.

The school were reported to be ‘very busy’ working on year 2 of the Global Citizenship Travel theme and are applying for their 9th Green Flag this year.

Sustainable methods of transport to school have also been introduced at the school, with those at Gaelscoil taking part in National Bike Week and Clean Air Week. Pupils created some bicycle styled artwork during National Bike Week to highlight the importance of sustainable travel, for both wellbeing and the environment.

They also took part in a speed survey where they recorded the speed of cars passing the school and found that 99% of cars remained within the speed limit.

A ‘Travel To School’ map was also completed to find out how far pupils had to travel and where they travelled from.

‘Ceadoain na gCos’ is another initiative undertaken at the school, which found that the number of pupils walking to school increased from 35% to 69%.

As part of the Global Citizenship aspect, they created a World map to represent the different nationalities in the school, while also planting a tree on the school grounds.

Currently, Gaelscoil na hÍde are preparing for their renewal visit in February and are hoping to have a new Green Flag to celebrate over the coming months.
