2022 officers drive in next Sunday, 27th February

-

This coming Sunday February 27th will see our four principal officers take to the first tee and drive-in for 2022, weather permitting. The Drive In is an important tradition in golf clubs everywhere and is therefore a special day for President John O’Sullivan, Lady Captain Siobhan Feehan, Men’s Captain Gerry Stanton and Juvenile Captain Ben Carey. The day’s festivities will commence with a mixed scramble at 1.30pm with the official drive-in scheduled to take place at 4pm.

Once the formalities and photoshoot have taken place refreshments will be served in the clubhouse. All in the club wish President John, Captains Siobhan, Gerry and Ben a lovely day and hope you have a wonderful golfing year. On Sunday next may you all drive the ball straight down the first fairway or to borrow the slogan from a well-known car manufacturer “Have The Drive Of Your Life.”

COURSE REPORT FOLLOWING STORMS DUDLEY AND EUNICE

Following the dreadful weather we encountered last week it’s good to report that our course did not suffer too much damage despite two raging storms in quick succession. Speaking with secretary/manager Denis Twomey he said that while we had a number of trees down the amount of damage was far less than anticipated given the severity of the storm warnings. Denis said the course was soft due to the amount of rainfall and hence the decision to close the course from Tuesday of last week.

WEEKLY COMPETITION

Due to the closure of the course on Sunday and Monday as another storm named Franklin brought more heavy rain with it our competition did not take place; the second week of the league was also cancelled. In golf we love it when we have “back to back pars” but “back to back storms” is not a scenario we have too often thankfully.

LADIES COMPETITION SUNDAY 13TH /MONDAY, 14TH FEBRUARY 15 HOLE S/F

Sunday 13th and Monday 14th were rather difficult days for golf due to the heavy rain which had fallen over the weekend. The course was closed on Saturday but did reopen for play on Sunday and Monday allowing the ladies competition to go ahead albeit in tough conditions. Nevertheless the scores returned were very good, Rae Llewellyn (37) was the overall winner playing on Sunday Rae returned an excellent 32 points to clinch first place. That one extra point was vital to securing top billing as all the other ladies in the prizes scored 31 points. Well done to all the prize- winners on returning such fine scores in less than ideal conditions.

The full results are as follows - 1st Rae Llewellyn (37) 32pts, 2nd Lisa McLaughlin (19) 31pts, 3rd Emma Comyn (21) 31pts b6, 4th Nuala O’Sullivan (24) 31pts b3, 5th Pauline Morrison (13) 31pts.

MELLERICK’S PHARMACY SPRING LEAGUE

The first week of the League was hampered by the closure of the course from Tuesday onwards. In the early part of the week it was due to the rain and in the later part Storms Dudley and Eunice which brought our county to a standstill. Those who had entered the weekly competition despite the inclement weather were fortunate enough to get a card in for their respective teams. Some ladies did not get to play and others were disappointed they could not avail of the one re-entry allowed, when it comes to the climate in this lovely green land of ours the only thing we can ever be certain of is the uncertainty.

Despite the weather conditions as outlined above Fermoy ladies returned some great scores. The team in first place at the end of week one are the “Blackberries” captained by Ex Officio Oonagh Mee who returned a whopping 60 points between them to give their team a four point lead. In second place are the “Blueberries” captained by Margaret O’Flynn with 56 points just ahead of “Mangos” with Elizabeth Geaney at the helm on 55 points. When returning your card it would help co-ordinators Mary and Carrie enormously if ladies remember to record the “Fruit Name” of their team as well as the other details.

THURSDAY LADIES

Unfortunately, we did not have our very popular weekly scramble due to the closure of the course. We had all been advised on Wednesday of the extended closure by way of the BRS and the Thursday Ladies WhatsApp and it was great to know in advance and make other plans for the day.

MEN’S CLUB REPORT

Our last two competitions were either disrupted or cancelled due to the recent inclement weather. The heavy rain which began on the evening of Friday 11th led to the closure of the course on Saturday, while it did reopen for play on Sunday 13th the ground was very soft making the going quite difficult. The allowing of play on Fridays to facilitate Mike’s Tyres Spring League did at least give some gents an opportunity to get a round in that weekend. Last weekend’s competition also fell victim to the elements as reported in the Ladies section the damage caused by Storms Dudley and Eunice was fairly minimal, but the amount of rain which continued to fall at the end of the week closed the course all weekend so we had no competition.

RESULTS

15 Hole Voucher Competition - Friday, 11th February: First David Horan 33pts (09). Second Ivor O’Callaghan 29pts (03). Sunday, 13th February: Category A (0-8.6) - First Marc Gallagher 35pts (03). Second Johnathan Higgins 34pts (08); Category B (8.7-14.6) First Ronan O’Hagan 36pts (10). Second Shane Keating 35pts (13); Category C (14.7+) - First John JH Maguire 39pts (22). Second Alan Murphy 36pts (14).

THURSDAY SENIOR GENTS

On Thursday last our weekly scramble succumbed to the weather, hopefully this week we will fare better and are all out today Thursday, 24th February enjoying a wonderful day.

CONDOLENCES

Last Sunday morning word began to filter through of the sad passing of our longstanding member Michael Leonard. Michael was the loveliest gentleman and the word “gentleman” is so fitting in describing him, he had a gentle nature, always good humoured and softly spoken he will be sorely missed by all in the club who had the good fortune to know him.

Michael will be well known to many in Fermoy and Lismore through his work with the Bank of Ireland and was captain of Lismore Golf Club back in the seventies not long before his transfer to the Fermoy Branch. Michael played in a regular three ball on Saturday mornings for many years with our current President John O’Sullivan, who was also a work colleague, and last year’s incumbent Niall Cremen who will both miss their great friend very much. Michael regularly attended the Thursday Senior Gents and his loss will be felt immensely there also.

President John, Lady Captain Siobhan, Men’s Captain Gerry on behalf of all the members and staff extend their sincere sympathies to Michael’s wife and fellow member Helen, daughter Katherine and son Michael and the extended Leonard family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
