Works carried out just in time
Before the stormy weather took hold last week a lot of outdoor work had been carried out. Jim Noonan our CE worker worked at the Chapel Street entrance to Lios on Oir digging out and preparing a new bed which will be planted with native wildflower seed during March.
Thanks to John Foley GSS Lismore outdoor staff Waterford City and Co. Co and his team for digging out plants on the Tallow Road. Some members of the Lismore Tidy Towns work team dismantled the three compost bays in Lismore’s Millennium Park. Those bays were built in 2017 using recycled pallets but after an examination this year were found to be rotting. After confirmation that we were going to receive a special tidy towns grant from the Department of Rural and Community Development it was decided to go ahead and replace those bays with treated timber.
This has been a very successful project as each year since 2017 great compost has been produced which has been used in containers and beds around Lismore and hopefully this revamping will help continue the project way into the future.
Thanks to the first year students of Blackwater Community School who recently came out and did a litter pick in the Millennium Park and around Lismore and to their Green Schools team who are also involved with litter picking. Transition students from BCS were also involved in the planting of an edible hedge at Mountain View Lismore under the guidance of tidy towns members Brid Nowlan and Nora O’Connor. Thank you to all of the residents of Mountain View housing estate for their support of this project. Signage re the above financed from the Communities Activities Enhancement grant will be placed later at this site.
Working with Cappoquin Tidy Towns and Tallow Tidy Towns it is planned to do a litter pick up on the Cappoquin Road on Saturday, 26th February and the Tallow Road on Saturday, 5th March. Contact Nora O’Connor, chairperson for more details 0861628448.
It is planned to hold an annual general meeting for Lismore Tidy Towns on Monday, 7th March. More details to follow in next week’s edition.
ECO TIP OF THE WEEK
Look after our feathered friends by providing a shallow container for water that will help keep your visitor feathers clean. Replace water every 2-4 days and remove ice so that it does not freeze over. Wash food and drink containers with warm soapy water to reduce the risk of disease.
