Meet your neighbour over a bowl of borscht
The Lithuanian and Ukrainian community are inviting people in Mitchelstown to meet them and share a meal on St Patrick’s Day, right after the local parade. The communities will be cooking borscht in the square, and they are inviting people to join them and to meet their neighbours over a hot bowl of soup.
Against a backdrop of war in their home country, members of the Ukrainian community will be on hand to share their experiences of their families and friends back home, and introduce their national dish to the hungry.
Borscht is a beetroot soup that originated in Ukraine, and promises to be both bright red, and offer a little warmth, on what is bound to be a perpetually chilly Patrick’s Day!
More details will be forthcoming as the day, and situation, progresses.
DONATIONS
One of the organisers of the event advised anyone looking to help at the moment, to provide funds rather than goods like clothes or food, for logistical reasons. She recommends checking the Ukrainian Embassy’s social media, where they have shared information on the best way to contribute.
The St Patrick’s Day parade in Mitchelstown kicks off at 1pm sharp outside the old mart on George’s Street. Anyone looking to get involved in the parade is asked to contact Michael White on 086 3797250.
