€1,000 raised at Tidy Towns coffee morning

- JOHN AHERN

When we touched down in The Wagon Tavern last Saturday morning, this Fermoy Tidy Towns fundraiser was in full swing. An ‘ unrestricted’ post Covid event, it allowed people who hadn’t socialised in a while meet up. Local councillor and Tidy Towns activist, Cllr. Noel McCarthy, said the coffee morning was a great success.

“Well done to all concerned, especially, Tom Aherne, for providing the venue and all those who gave prizes for the raffle, at the last count, we had almost €1,000 raised, as usual people are very generous. There was a great turnout here this morning, and as well as being a financial success, the public response is a real vote of confidence in the work of Fermoy Tidy Towns,” he said.

GIVING UP THEIR TIME TO ENHANCE THE TOWN

Tidy Towns committees represent all that’s good about volunteerism and community activism. Giving freely of their time, ‘ordinary’ men and women commit countless hours to enhancing their surroundings - this ranges from litter picks to the installing of flower beds and hanging baskets. It also incorporates cleaning, tidying and painting, amongst other necessary works.

A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT DONE, A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT LEFT TO DO

With extra daylight and hopefully, finer weather on the way, organisations such as Fermoy Tidy Towns will really spring into life in the coming weeks. They are very visible and this is just one of the reasons why they command such respect. The work of a Tidy Towns volunteer is never done and it’s an ongoing battle to combat litter, defeat weeds and improve approach roads. The committee are fortunate to have such a dedicated core of activists, who are never afraid to get stuck in. According to Cllr. McCarthy, extra help is never refused.

“We’ve a fantastic crew, but a few extra bodies would be more than welcome. If it’s only an hour a week, that would be a great boost, we get a lot of satisfaction from seeing the fruits of our labour,” Cllr. McCarthy said.

NEXT FUNDRAISER

The next fundraiser for Fermoy Tidy Towns is a bingo night in The Wagon Tavern on 11th March at 8pm.
