Lynch Camp cleaning up discarded litter
Personnel from Lynch Camp in Kilworth took to their neighbouring roads this week in an effort to clear the area of litter.
A litter pick was conducted on the R639 near Gloccamaura, up and down each side of the main Kilworth to Mitchelstown road.
The clean-up was also conducted across the military-owned lands, the Range, which is a popular walking spot amongst locals.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, this week between 15 and 20 personnel of Lynch Camp set out on the mission, according to CQMS Declan Clifford.
“When we get a chance between taskings, we do our best to clean the area up. Twice a year we go out and do a major clean-up,” he told The Avondhu.
In total, 43 bags of rubbish were collected, mainly consisting of household items along with a variety of discarded Christmas decorations.
As well as improving the area, the aim of the litter pick is to raise awareness of illegal dumping.
Last year, a similar effort was carried out by members of Lynch Camp after hedges in the area were cut back to reveal what was described as ‘a generation worth of rubbish’. In total, 130 bags of rubbish were collected across ‘the triangle’ in the vicinity of the Kilworth ranges and on the R639.
At the time, the majority of items collected consisted of household waste and products left as a result of fly-tipping such as cans, drink bottles and food wrappers. However larger household items illegally dumped in the area were also found, including the cistern of a toilet, a mattress and a microwave.
