Lazy litter in Fermoy

-

When one looks at both pictures included here, it’s hard to believe the town is now regarded as one of the top litter-free towns in the country.

Happily, the scenes of the litter-strewn area around the polling station at the CBS back in the 1980s is no longer being tolerated. However, the more recent picture taken on Ashe Quay recently showing litter around the canopy area near the Tourist Office - with a litter bin just yards away - shows the blatant disregard a small minority of the public have.

We hear so much about cigarette butts being a bogey when it comes to losing marks in the Tidy Towns competition. This small green (artificial grass) area at Ashe Quay (hardly 12ft square) had, at a guess, 20 to 30 butts littering this amenity on the quay.

It shouldn’t be too difficult to catch those responsible in the act in this case. All it would take is for a Garda or the Litter Warden to sit in his or her car and observe. A court appearance and a bit of naming and shaming would be a big help in this instance. Hopefully that will be the case before too long.
