N72 ‘deteriorating’ in Lismore town

- KATIE GLAVIN

Following an incident on the road from Lismore Bridge to the town monument, calls have been extended to secure funding to improve the road surface on this stretch of the N72.

At a recent meeting of the Dungarvan Lismore District, local councillor John Pratt pointed to the incident involving a car here, stating that the road surface is becoming ‘excessively bad’.

“The roughness of the road didn’t help there at that time. It isn’t in the best of condition,” Cllr Pratt said.

Resurfacing was recently carried out on the N72 at the other side of the bridge, leaving the stretch from the bridge to the monument in the town in need of repair.

Director of Roads, Gabriel Hynes responded to the councillor’s queries, stating that the road surface in that location is ‘deteriorating’.

Mr Hynes added that the council are currently looking into a traffic calming scheme for the area that will include works to footpaths, however, this may involve a Part 8 planning process.

“It’s going to be a fairly big scheme. It is something that is on our programme and the TII’s (Transport Infrastructure Ireland) programme as well that requires attention,” Mr Hynes confirmed.
