Promenade project for Fermoy Tidy Towns

- KATIE GLAVIN

The promenade on Rathealy Road in Fermoy is set for a revamp under the Fermoy Tidy Towns group, with works to take place in cooperation with Avondhu Blackwater.

As the main project for the Tidy Towns group this year, the aim is to clean up and revamp the wall and the associated area along the promenade from Lower Thomas Street as far as the Sub Aqua Club.

News of the project was revealed at a recent meeting of the Fermoy Municipal District where local councillor Noel McCarthy tabled a motion seeking repairs to the Rathealy Road footpath to coincide with the works.

“Working closely with Avondhu Blackwater, this would be our main project for 2022 in Tidy Towns,” Cllr McCarthy said. “Inside the wall on that promenade from Lower Thomas Street as far as the Sub Aqua Club has been neglected over the years. The stone wall can be replaced and capped and it would look very well. Inside the wall, there is a lovely footpath that needs to be power washed and cleaned up.

We can put flower beds on the banks behind it. I think it’s a good project for the Tidy Towns” he said.

Cllr McCarthy stated that he was requesting the new footpath works, as if outside the wall did not look well, it would ‘spoil’ the new works in the area.

Senior Engineer with Cork city and County Council responded to the councillor’s motion, stating that the location would be proposed once a budget and footpath programme is confirmed.

“Subject to confirmation of a footpath programme and budget in this district in 2022, the location will be proposed, subject to the adoption of the entire future programme by councillors,” Mr O’Gorman said.
