Bins at Blackwater slipway remain under investigation

- KATIE GLAVIN

Bins located on the slipway to the Blackwater River near Brian Boru Square, Fermoy remain ‘under investigation’ according to a Cork County Council spokesperson.

While no bins were seen to be on the slipway on Friday, in recent weeks, concerns were raised again around the matter as an overflowing Skippo bag was seen located just outside the slipway wall alongside an overflowing bin.

Litter, understood to be largely household waste items, surrounded the Skippo bag, while several black bin bags were seen on top of the bag.

By Friday, February 25, the Skippo bag and surrounding litter were no longer in the area and a ‘No Dumping’ sign, erected by Cork County Council, was located on the wall at the slipway entrance.

In a previous article in The Avondhu, the issue of wheelie bins being stored inside the gate at the slipway by Brian Boru Square was highlighted as concerns were raised locally that associated rubbish could enter the river causing pollution.

At the time, over 15 wheelie bins were noted inside the slipway gate, along with some larger, commercial type bins.
