PANCAKE TUESDAY AT COLÁISTE AN CHRAOIBHÍN

-

A group of students from Coláiste an Chraoibhín (Fermoy) cracked the art of making the perfect pancake this week with the help of their teacher, Ms Fitzgerald.

In the olden days, there were many foods that our grandparents would not eat during Lent such as meat, fish, fats, eggs and milky foods that wouldn’t last the forty days of Lent without going off.

Pancakes were made on Shrove Tuesday, the day before before Ash Wednesday, as pancakes were the dish that could use up eggs, fats and milk in the house just by adding flour.

The word ‘shrove’ comes from shrive which means ‘absolved’ or ‘forgiven’, Lent is a time of fasting and renewal and so, Shrove Tuesday soon became better known as Pancake Tuesday. Well done to the students who served up some tasty offerings!
