League campaign gets underway

-

Our 2022 season gets underway on Saturday next (5th March) when we travel to Castletownroche to take on Abbey Rovers in the first round of the Cavanagh’s of Fermoy Division 2 Football League.

While we haven’t much ball work under our belts, this should still be an interesting fixture against two evenly matched sides. It will also give Denis Twomey and his selectors a chance to see how their team have wintered. Last season was a memorable one for our footballers, who claimed both league (division 3) and championship (junior C county) titles along the way. A good league campaign, against decent opposition would set us up nicely for the junior B football championship.

At the time of going to press, we had a number of players unavailable, however, you will have this from time to time. With a promising weekend forecast, conditions should be very good in Castletownroche on Saturday.

FIXTURE

Saturday, 5th March, Cavanagh’s of Fermoy Div. 2FL, Araglin v Abbey Rovers in Castletownroche at 4pm. Referee Dave Twomey (Shanballymore).

SOCIAL ON SATURDAY NIGHT

On Saturday night next, everyone associated with Araglin GAA is heading to Cahir House Hotel for a night of celebration. Guests of honour will be members of our ‘double winning’ county panel from last year. Formal events have been thin on the ground in the last couple of years, so understandably, everyone is looking forward to a great night out. This event is timed to get underway at 7.30pm. Music is by The Buachaills.

LOTTO UP TO €5,600

Our weekly lotto remains the largest source of income for the club (last year during the height of the Covid, it managed to bring in almost €30,000). Presently, lotto players have the option of playing instore or online, it’s hoped that online sales will continue to increase in the weeks and months ahead.

Last week’s numbers were: 12, 20, 25 and 30. No winner. Lucky dips to: €50 Emmet Allen; €50 Ber Wheeler, Kilworth, c/o John Browne Sr.; €25 John Byron, Araglin (online entry) and €25 Paula O’Donovan, Araglin (online entry).

Next lotto is tonight (Thursday 3rd March) in Christy’s at 9.30pm for a jackpot of €5,600.

BIG LOTTO NIGHT TO LOOK FORWARD TO

With St. Patrick’s Day falling on a Thursday, our lotto committee are looking forward to ‘a big night’ in Christy’s on 17th March.

HAD WE A WINNER?

The well publicised Rebels’ Bounty draw took place on Tuesday, 1st March. Unfortunately, we’re still waiting for a winner, following the draws for January and February. Thanks to everyone who subscribed, we won’t give up hope just yet.

GAA NATIONAL DRAW

We’ve signed up again for this draw. Supporters are reminded that Araglin Juvenile GAA are promoting the draw and will retain all proceeds. Draw co-ordinator is Frank Kiernan - 086-7947918.

METAL DETECTORS

By now, it’s a familiar greeting ‘how’s the scrap metal collection going?’. The answer is ‘pretty good’. Thanks to extensive detective work, we’re still sourcing a variety of metals and at this stage we no longer have to introduce ourselves to Neil and Eddie Barry, who run STR Metal Recycling in Mitchelstown. So when is it going to end? All we can say at this juncture is that, we’re nearer the end than the start, so, stay tuned.

HEDGE CUTTING

A word of thanks to John Tobin, Coolaneague and machine operator, Ollie Daly, Ballinmadock who did a very neat job cutting the roadside hedge of Araglin Community Field.

IS IT A ROAD OR A RUNWAY?

A major upgrade of our ‘main road’ from the grotto to the hall is underway. Given the amount of raw materials being used, no expense is being spared, so well done to Cork County Council officials for their excellent work.

SUB AQUA CLUB TO BENEFIT FROM FASHION SHOW

Fermoy Sub Aqua Club (also known as Blackwater Search & Rescue Unit) are the chosen beneficiary of a forthcoming fashion show, which takes place in Araglin Hall on Friday 25th March. Models are currently being recruited, readers are reminded that it’s a case of ‘you don’t call them, they call you’.

BINGO ON SUNDAY

Bingo (outdoor/indoor format) takes place in Araglin Hall on Sunday next, 6th March at 2.30pm sharp. Bingo players are reminded that the €4,000 jackpot will resume again on Sunday (48 calls or less).

BALLROOM DANCING LESSONS FOR ARAGLIN HALL

It’s our understanding that formal ballroom dancing lesson will start in Araglin Hall shortly.

JOAN TAKES OVER CARNIVAL’S TOP JOB

Community activist, Joan O’Mahoney from Gortnaskehy is the new chairperson of Araglin Carnival committee - the first woman to ever hold this position - the carnival started in 1957. It’s been a case of ‘lean pickings’ for the carnival in recent years, however, with the necessary effort and goodwill, things can be turned around.

CYCLE COMING UP IN ARAGLIN

A fundraising cycle in aid of Araglin National School takes place in Araglin on Mother’s Day (Sunday, 27th March). More details to follow.

FAST FOOD LITTER BUGS

He/she is as regular as clockwork in their littering of Araglin. An avid consumer of fast food, it would be a great relief if they took their rubbish home with them.

WHY WERE TRADITIONAL PINT DRINKERS DISTRACTED?

A number of respectable God fearing pint drinkers were ‘very distracted’ at last Saturday night’s party in Christy’s. We have our suspicions.
