Those defending Ukraine are younger than our junior team

-

Harrowing pictures are coming out of Ukraine after the Russian invasion of February 24th. Killavullen would be recognized as having a very young junior hurling and football team at the moment, with the vast majority of the team either in college, school, or on recognized training programs.

The young people resolutely trying to defend Ukraine from the might of the Russian Army and Air Force are as young as our juniors if not more so. History may show that Russia has made a momentous error of judgement but nothing should detract from the heroism being displayed by the people of Ukraine.

‘Stand Up and Fight’ is the popular slogan of the Munster Rugby team, but the people of Ukraine, superbly marshalled by the defiant stance of their president Volodymyr Zelensky are literally having to do that. Ukraine nationals that had even settled in Ireland, are returning to fight, and we admire their bravery. Let us all earnestly pray that the fighting will end soon and that a resolution can be found quickly, but I fear that this is a defining moment in history which will have ramifications for years to come. Shchob Boh zmyluvavsya nad yikhnimy dushamy i zakhoplyuvavsya yikhn oyu khorobristyu.
