Road collapses into river

- KATIE GLAVIN

A retaining wall in Araglin collapsed on Wednesday into a nearby river, taking with it a large portion of the road.

It is understood that the wall located in the Coolmohan area on the way to Araglin School, collapsed at around midday due to the powerful waters of the overflowing river beside it.

Speaking with The Avondhu, Moss Fitzgerald who was working on site that day after receiving a call regarding the collapsed wall at about 12.30pm, noted that the road had to close due to the severity of the collapse.

“The wall collapsed into the river with the power of the water and took half of the road with it. The road is closed it’s so bad and detours have been set up for the school,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

Cork County Council were on site shortly after the incident to ensure road closures and put in place detours.

Wednesday saw many households across The Avondhu circulation area awaken to heavy rain, freezing temperatures and in some parts, snow.

In Munster, a status yellow wind warning was in place until 10am on March 9, with a yellow rain warning in place until 7pm that night. Localised flooding was also experienced in some areas.

It is understood that Cork County Council attended incidents of flooding on the Kilworth to Glanworth road and that sandbags were deployed to some households in the area. Heavy flooding was seen on the Castletownroche road near the hall in Ballyhooly, with water almost entering the front door of a nearby home.

On the N72 just outside Ballyhooly, further flooding was seen.

In Castlelyons, reports surfaced of a vehicle which became stuck in floodwater near Bridesbridge, with those travelling in the area advised to take care on approach.

At approximately 2pm, Cork County Council issued a road alert informing the public that Killavullen Bridge and Longfields Bridge were to close.

Flood barriers in Fermoy were also put in place on Wednesday as a precaution. While in nearby Kilworth, several junctions and sections of road were heavily flooded, proving a hazard to motorists, with drainage unable to cope with the heavy rainfall.

Heavy snow was reported in several areas, particularly in North Cork around Mitchelstown, with heavy snow reported in Derrylahan, Mitchelstown, and from Mitchelstown as far as Tipperary Town including Anglesboro and Galbally.
